After My Husband Chose His Mistress’s Baby Chapter 1

I got home at seven with Thai takeout and a headache. Our Upper East Side apartment smelled like lemon cleaner and nothing else. Arlo's work laptop sat open on the kitchen counter.

He never left it open. Not once in six years of marriage.

I only meant to close it. Then the screen lit up, and a name sat at the top of the chat. Miriam Perry. His secretary. The woman who sent me birthday cards with glitter on them.

I scrolled.

Photos first. Her in lace. Her in nothing. Then the pet names. *My king. Daddy bear.* Then Arlo's replies, warm and sloppy, nothing like the tired man who came home and grunted at me.

Then Miriam, two weeks ago: *Seven weeks! Our little donation worked. She's too stupid to notice.*

My hands shook so hard the mouse skittered across the pad. I should have stopped. I couldn't. I kept going back, month after month, until the cold takeout bag slid off my arm and hit the tile.

He came home at eleven. I was sitting in the dark, the laptop glowing in front of me.

Arlo stopped in the doorway and twisted his Rolex around his wrist. That was his tell. "Why are you in my files?"

"Seven weeks," I said. "Is that how far along she is?"

His jaw flexed. Then the bravado slid on like a jacket. "It's a donation, Georgia. Don't make it ugly."

"You slept with her."

"You're paranoid. You've been paranoid since we started this whole baby thing." He waved a hand at me, not even looking. "I helped a friend. That's all."

"There are photos."

That made him look at me. Something hard came into his face. "You know what? You should be grateful I stayed. You couldn't even give me a child."

The room went very quiet. I heard the refrigerator hum.

He walked out. He didn't look back. I listened to the guest room door click shut and kept sitting there, one hand pressed flat against my stomach, because it had started to feel strange.

Three days later, my phone buzzed on the bathroom sink.

*Hi Georgia! 😊 Since we're basically family now, want to help me pick out baby clothes? Arlo says you have such good taste.*

I stared at the heart emoji until my eyes burned. Then I put the phone face down and threw up in the toilet.

I told myself it was stress. But I was late, and I had been for a while. So I went to Dr. Sarah Lin's office on Madison and sat on the crinkly paper in a thin gown.

She turned the screen toward me. A tiny flicker. A bean of light.

"Six weeks," Dr. Lin said gently. "Congratulations, Georgia."

For one second, everything in me lifted. I'd wanted this for two years. I had cried over negative tests in the dark so Arlo wouldn't hear.

Then I thought of Miriam's glittery handwriting. Arlo's hand waving me away.

I would not raise a child in that house. Not in that poison. I decided right there, with the gel still cold on my skin. I would have this baby, and I would leave.

But Arlo made the house colder every day. He walked past me like I was furniture. He came home smelling of her perfume, jasmine and something sugary, and he didn't even try to hide it. Miriam sent another text, then another. A photo of a tiny yellow onesie. *Do you think he'd like this?*

I stopped eating. I stopped sleeping. I lay awake and counted the hours until morning.

On a Thursday, the cramps came.

I called Arlo three times. It went to voicemail. I called a car myself.

The hospital room was small and bright. Nobody sat in the chair beside my bed. I stared at the ceiling, white and flat and spotless, and I listened to the machine beep until a nurse switched it off.

It was over. Just like that.

I waited to scream. I waited to fall apart. Instead, something inside me went still and hard, like water freezing. It didn't feel like grief anymore. It felt exact.

The next morning, I didn't cry. I made one phone call.

Arthur Sterling's office was on the thirty-fourth floor in Midtown, all dark wood and gray skyline. He had been the Harris family's attorney for thirty years. He taught me to ride a bike in our driveway when I was seven. He was the only person who still called me Miss Harris.

I straightened my cuffs before I sat down. Black coffee steamed on his desk. I'd stopped drinking lattes the week before.

"I need two things," I said. "Start divorce proceedings against Arlo Kelly."

Sterling didn't blink.

"And begin the formal process of taking back Harris Holdings. All of it."

The old man held my gaze for one long moment. Then he opened his bottom drawer and laid two folders on the desk. They were already labeled.

He hadn't asked me a single question.

"I've kept these ready for six years," he said quietly. "I hoped you'd never need them."

I picked up the first folder. My hands were steady now.
