After My Husband Chose His Mistress Over Our Son Chapter 1

The apartment was silent except for the soft hum of the refrigerator and Quinn's gentle breathing from the next room. I sat at our kitchen island, the blue light of Shane's laptop illuminating my face as my fingers hovered over the keyboard. I had only meant to check our shared calendar for his upcoming faculty dinner—something I'd done a hundred times before—but the browser was still logged into his email.

I clicked on a thread titled 'Friday Meeting,' expecting to find department schedules. Instead, a message from Zaria Cook filled the screen, accompanied by a photo that made my stomach drop.

The timestamp showed it was from three weeks ago. The subject line read: 'Missing you already.' The attached image showed a woman—young, beautiful, with dark hair cascading over bare shoulders—lying in what was unmistakably our downtown hotel's signature white bedding. The same hotel where Shane had claimed to stay during his 'department retreat' last month.

My hands remained perfectly steady as I scrolled down. Two years of messages. Two years of lies. There was Shane's voice—a version of it I'd never heard directed at me—telling her she was 'the only one who truly understood him.' There were hotel receipts, saved with clinical precision. There were intimate photos that made my chest tighten with a pain so sharp I had to press my palm against it to keep breathing.

Two years. The entire span of our marriage after Quinn's birth. Every night Shane had claimed he couldn't bear to be close to me because of the 'trauma' he'd experienced in the delivery room. Every therapy session he'd refused to attend. Every time he'd fallen asleep with his back to me, claiming he needed space to 'process.'

It had all been a lie.

I read every message, studied every photo, memorized every date. I saw the pattern clearly now—his 'conferences' and 'late meetings' aligned perfectly with Zaria's messages. The woman who had been warming my husband's bed while I sat alone in our apartment, believing I was patient enough, understanding enough, loving enough to heal him.

When I finished, I closed the laptop exactly as I'd found it. I returned it to its spot on the counter, aligned with the edge just as Shane preferred. Then I sat in the darkness of our kitchen, listening to the clock tick, feeling something inside me crystallize into something cold and hard and perfect.

The next morning, I smiled at Shane across our breakfast table. He was telling Quinn about his day's schedule, mentioning a 'faculty lunch' he couldn't miss. I nodded and sipped my coffee, watching him over the rim of my mug. He had no idea that I knew everything.

Three days later, I sat in Derek Huang's sleek Midtown office, sliding a USB drive across his polished desk.

'This is everything,' I said, my voice steady. 'Two years of messages, hotel receipts, photos. I want out.'

Derek's expression remained professionally neutral as he plugged the drive into his computer. But I caught the slight widening of his eyes as he scrolled through the evidence.

'You're not claiming any marital assets?' he asked, looking up at me.

'Not a penny,' I replied. 'I don't want anything that would tie me to him. But I want full custody of Quinn. Sole legal and physical. That's non-negotiable.'

Derek nodded slowly, studying me. 'Given this pattern of neglect and deception, your case is strong. But we need to document everything—every absence, every broken promise, every time he's chosen her over your son.'

I smiled for the second time in three days. 'I've already started.'

That evening, I photographed the hotel invoice Shane had carelessly left on his desk—a receipt from the night Quinn had spiked a fever and Shane hadn't answered my calls. I screenshot new messages when he left his phone unlocked in the bathroom. I began a detailed journal, timestamping every absence, every lie.

Meanwhile, I called my parents in Seattle. 'It's time,' I told them. 'We need to move forward with Zurich.' They didn't ask questions. They simply said, 'We'll be ready.'

Over dinner that night, I looked at Shane across our dining table and gently suggested couples therapy.

'I think it might help with your trauma,' I said softly. 'I'm willing to try anything.'

He reached across the table and squeezed my hand, his eyes warm with practiced gratitude. 'You're so understanding, Mia. I'll look into it this week, I promise.'

Later, after he fell asleep, I found his phone on the nightstand. The screen lit up with a new message from Zaria: another photo, another hotel room, sent during the very 'faculty lunch' he'd mentioned that morning.

I added it to my file, my face a mask of calm determination. The game had begun, and Shane had no idea he was already playing.
