After My Husband Chose His Boss Over Me Chapter 1

The lasagna was still warm when I stepped off the subway at Fulton Street. I'd wrapped the container in a kitchen towel, the way my mother used to do when she brought food to my father's office — back when she still believed those small gestures mattered. The weight of it sat familiar in my hands. Comforting, even.

I'd made Gavin's favorite. The recipe took three hours start to finish, layers of pasta and béchamel and the Italian sausage he liked from the butcher on Amsterdam. I'd gotten up early to start it, humming while I worked, imagining his face when I showed up. Surprise visits were our thing. Or they used to be.

The lobby of his building was all marble and glass. I signed in at the desk — the security guard knew me by now, waved me through with a smile — and took the elevator to the fourteenth floor. My reflection looked back at me from the polished doors. I'd worn the blue sweater Gavin said brought out my eyes. My hair was down. I looked like someone's wife bringing her husband lunch. I looked exactly like what I was.

The elevator opened onto a hallway lined with glass-walled conference rooms. Gavin's office was at the end. I could see him through the transparent walls before I got close — dark suit, white shirt, that easy posture he had when he was relaxed. He wasn't alone.

I stopped walking.

Noelle Castillo was pressed against him. Not standing near him. Pressed. Her hand was on his chest. His hand was in her hair. The kiss was not accidental. It was not brief.

I stood there holding the lasagna and watched my husband kiss his boss like I wasn't real. Like I had never been real.

The conference room door was cracked open. Voices drifted out — low, easy, the kind of intimacy that comes from repetition. Noelle said something I couldn't hear. Gavin laughed. Then his voice, clear and amused: "She's just at home. She has nothing else going on."

The lasagna container was cold in my hands. When had it gotten cold? I looked down at it — at the careful way I'd wrapped it, at the little note I'd tucked under the towel that said *Thought you could use something homemade today* — and something inside me went very still.

I set the container on a hallway table. Quietly. Carefully. The way I did everything.

Then I turned and walked away.

No one saw me. No one called my name. The elevator doors closed on my reflection — same blue sweater, same careful hair — and I watched myself descend fourteen floors without blinking.

The lobby was bright. Too bright. I walked toward the revolving doors and nearly collided with a man standing motionless near the elevator bank. He was staring up at the floor I'd just left, jaw tight, hands shoved deep in his coat pockets. His face had the look of someone who'd just watched something break.

I knew that look. I was wearing it.

He turned. Our eyes met. Neither of us said anything for a long moment.

Then I heard myself speak. "There's a hotel two blocks from here."

His expression didn't change. He just nodded once and held the elevator door open.

We didn't talk on the walk over. The cold bit at my face but I couldn't feel it. The hotel was small, discreet, the kind of place that didn't ask questions. I paid for the room with the credit card Gavin had given me for groceries. The irony wasn't lost on me.

The room was generic. Beige walls. White sheets. A couch by the window. We sat on opposite ends of it and stared at nothing.

"Ambrose," he said finally. "Ambrose Castillo."

"Rosemary Morgan."

He nodded slowly. "Noelle's my wife."

"Gavin's my husband."

The words sat between us like evidence.

We ordered room service neither of us wanted. Coffee. Sandwiches. Bread rolls that went untouched. Somewhere around the second hour, we started talking — about small things at first, then bigger ones. He asked how long I'd known. I said I hadn't, not until today, but maybe I had. Maybe I'd known for months and just refused to see it.

He understood that. I could tell.

When I finally stood to leave, we paused at the door. The space between us felt charged, dangerous. For a moment I thought he might reach for me. For a moment I thought I might let him.

But he just opened the door and said, "Take care of yourself, Rosemary."

I nodded. "You too."

I got home before Gavin did. Hung up my coat. Put away my keys. Sat at the kitchen table in the dark and waited.

He came in two hours later, whistling. Poured himself a scotch. Talked about his day — some meeting, some client, some triumph I was supposed to celebrate. I watched him move through our kitchen like nothing had changed.

And I understood, with perfect clarity, that I would never make his Sunday morning pancakes again.
