After My Fiancé Cheated With His Pregnant Mentee Chapter 1

Three days before, I'd cried happy tears in a fitting room. Tonight, I stood in the same boutique picking up the finished gown, and I felt nothing but a hum of nerves under my skin. The seamstress, Mrs. Ahn, held the garment bag out like she was handing me a newborn. "Careful with the beadwork," she said. "Every stitch is hand done."

I ran my fingers over the bodice through the plastic. Months of fittings. Months of picking thread colors nobody but me would ever notice. Tomorrow I'd walk down an aisle in this dress and become Naya King.

My phone buzzed in my coat pocket. I almost didn't check it. I wish I hadn't.

**Charley:** dont go home. go to jareds apartment. NOW. im sorry

No punctuation. No explanation. Charley Murray never typed like that. She was the friend who sent me three-paragraph texts about her Tinder dates with footnotes. This was six words and a typo and a *sorry* that made my stomach drop straight through the floor.

I didn't call her back. I just got in the car.

Rain hit the windshield in sheets the whole drive downtown, the wipers barely keeping up. Jared's building had a private elevator, and I still had the key card he gave me two years ago — *use it whenever you want to surprise me,* he'd said, smiling that easy smile that used to make my chest go warm. Tonight it just made my hands shake.

The apartment was dim. His shoes were by the door. His jacket was slung over a chair like always. "Jared?" I called out, and my voice sounded thin in that big quiet living room.

Then I heard it. A woman's laugh, low and satisfied, coming from the bedroom.

I pushed the door open.

Jared was sitting up against the headboard, bare-chested, hair a mess. And beside him — wrapped in his shirt, one bare shoulder catching the lamp light like she'd arranged herself for exactly this moment — was a woman I recognized. Arlette Smith. His old mentee from that leadership program he used to guest lecture for. I'd shaken her hand at three different galas.

Nobody moved for a second. Then Arlette tilted her head and smiled at me. Actually smiled.

"You should probably knock," she said.

"Naya —" Jared started, scrambling for the sheet like that would fix anything.

Arlette pressed a hand flat against her stomach, slow, deliberate. "I'm pregnant," she said, like she was telling me the weather. "Almost three months. I think the kindest thing you could do, for everyone, is step back gracefully."

The room tilted. I heard my own pulse in my ears. My hand found the ring on my finger before my brain caught up with what it was doing, and I ripped it off so hard the skin underneath burned.

I threw it. It bounced off the comforter and landed somewhere near Jared's knee.

"Eight years," I said. My voice came out steadier than I felt. "And you couldn't even wait one more night."

Jared opened his mouth. Nothing came out but my name, twice, useless.

"I'm pregnant too," I said. I don't know why I said it. I didn't even know if it was true. I just needed something that would land as hard as what she'd just done to me. Then I turned and walked out, past the garment bag still hanging on the sofa where I'd left it an hour ago, full of a dress for a wedding that wasn't happening.

The storm hadn't let up. I drove north on I-5 with the wipers on high and tears blurring everything past them, and I didn't see the truck's brake lights until they were right there. I swerved. The car spun, tires screaming against wet asphalt, and then the median barrier came up fast and there was a sound like the world cracking open.

After that, pieces. Rain on my face. A stranger's hands, careful and sure, pulling me out through torn metal. A voice, low and controlled, saying my name like he'd said it a hundred times before, even though I was almost certain I'd never met him. "Stay with me, Naya. I've got you."

I woke up under fluorescent lights at Seattle General. A doctor was talking about contusions, about how lucky I was, and then a nurse wheeled in an ultrasound machine I didn't understand the point of until she pressed the wand to my stomach and a small, fast flutter of sound filled the room.

"Six weeks," the doctor said gently.

I stared at the gray static on the screen. My bluff had been true the whole time.

Through the open door, I could see a man sitting in a chair in the hallway, elbows on his knees, still soaked from the rain, watching my room like he had nowhere else on earth to be. I didn't know his name yet. He never once looked away.
