After My Ex Changed the PIN, My Mother Died Chapter 1

I got to the restaurant at seven sharp. The place was called Aurelio's. White tablecloths. Candles in glass holders. The kind of spot where the waitstaff memorized your name and the wine list had pages.

I'd picked it three weeks ago. Jaxon said he'd make the reservation. I wore the navy dress—the one he'd said looked good on me last spring. I'd wrapped the cufflinks myself. Oak tree design. Sterling silver. I'd sketched them in my studio six months ago, thinking about the night we met. The night he stood with me under that tree in Central Park and told me I was worth more than everyone inside that gala.

Seven years ago tonight.

I set the box on the table. Small. Wrapped in cream paper with a thin gold ribbon. I ordered water. The waiter smiled and said my companion would be joining me soon. I said yes. He would.

By eight, I'd checked my phone twice. No messages. I texted Jaxon: *I'm here. Table by the window.*

No reply.

The tables around me filled up. Couples leaning in close. Someone laughing. The candle in front of me burned down half an inch. I sipped my water. I straightened the box. I told myself traffic was bad. He was busy. He'd come.

By nine, the waiter asked if I wanted to order an appetizer. I said I was still waiting. He nodded. His smile was thinner now. Pitying.

I hated that smile.

I checked my phone again. Still nothing. I opened my texts. Scrolled up through our thread. His last message was from this morning: *Busy day. See you tonight.* Three words and a period. I'd sent back a heart emoji. He hadn't responded to that either.

I put the phone face-down on the table.

By ten, the restaurant was starting to empty. A couple at the next table glanced at me, then away quickly. I could feel their pity like heat. The waiter came back. He didn't ask about food this time. He just refilled my water and left.

I picked up my phone. Opened Instagram. I don't know why. Maybe I wanted to see something normal. Something that wasn't this table, this candle, this empty chair.

The first story on my feed was from @LuxeLifeNYC. A lifestyle influencer. She posted from events all over the city. I almost scrolled past it.

Then I saw him.

Jaxon. In a dark suit. Standing beside a woman in pale gray. She was delicate. Blonde. She looked up at him like he'd hung the moon.

He was smiling.

His hands were at her throat. Clasping something. A necklace.

I tapped the screen. The image expanded.

The necklace.

*The Only One.*

I designed that piece. Six months ago. I'd poured everything into it. Every milestone. Every moment. The oak tree. Our first apartment in Brooklyn. The night on the Brooklyn Bridge when he said he loved me. I'd encoded it all into the curves, the settings, the way the pendant caught light.

I'd given the prototype to his assistant to have it finished at the jeweler. It was supposed to be for him. For tonight.

And he'd put it on her.

I stared at the screen until my eyes burned. The caption said: *Welcome back to NYC, @IylaHoffman! Some loves never fade.* Three heart emojis. Posted forty minutes ago.

I set the phone down. Face-down again. I didn't move. I didn't cry. I just sat there, looking at the candle. It had burned down to a stub.

The waiter came back one more time. He didn't say anything. He just left the check on the table. I pulled out cash. Left it there. Picked up the box of cufflinks.

I stood. Walked out. The cold hit me like a slap.

I took the subway back to the penthouse. I still had my key. The place was dark when I got there. I turned on the foyer light and stood in the entryway, still holding the box.

I set it on the table. Right in the center. Then I went to the bedroom and pulled my suitcases out of the closet.

I packed methodically. Clothes. Shoes. My sketchbooks. The framed photo of my mom. I left behind anything he'd bought me. The dresses. The jewelry. The perfume.

I heard the door open a little after midnight.

Jaxon came in loosening his tie. He saw me in the bedroom doorway with a suitcase at my feet. He stopped. Blinked.

"What are you doing?" he said.

I looked at him. Really looked. His tie was still perfect. His hair wasn't even mussed. He didn't look guilty. He looked annoyed.

"I saw the necklace," I said.

He frowned. "What necklace?"

"*The Only One.* The one I designed. The one you gave to Iyla Hoffman tonight."

He exhaled through his nose. "Lainey. It's just a necklace."

"I designed it for you," I said. My voice didn't shake. "Every part of it. The oak tree. Brooklyn. The bridge. It was ours."

"You're being dramatic," he said. He walked past me into the bedroom. Started unbuttoning his shirt. "Iyla just got back from London. I was being polite."

"You missed our anniversary."

He paused. Looked at me like he'd just remembered. "That was tonight?"

I felt something crack inside my chest. Clean. Final.

"We're done," I said.

He laughed. Actually laughed. "You're upset. You'll feel different in the morning."

I picked up the second suitcase. Walked past him. He didn't try to stop me.

I left before dawn. Called a car to a sublet in Brooklyn a friend had mentioned once. I paused at the terrace door. The garden I'd planted. Rosemary. Basil. A single white rose bush.

I touched the soil once. Just once.

Then I left.

The door clicked shut behind me. Quiet. Soft.

Final.
