After My Boyfriend Used Me to Fund His Wedding Chapter 1

I was looking for my keys when I found the wedding invitation.

Greyson's jacket hung on the hook by the door, the same navy blazer he wore to work every Tuesday. I'd dry-cleaned it last week. Paid for that too, though I'd stopped keeping track of those small expenses months ago. Or maybe I'd never stopped. Maybe I'd just gotten tired of adding them to the list I kept in the back of my phone, the one I told myself didn't matter because love wasn't supposed to be a ledger.

My keys weren't in my purse. I'd checked twice. So I reached into his pocket, fingers brushing past receipts and loose change, and pulled out a thick cream envelope.

The paper was expensive. I could tell by the weight. Embossed gold lettering caught the overhead light as I turned it over.

*Mr. and Mrs. Derek Lawson request the honor of your presence at the marriage of their daughter, Juliet Lawson, to Mr. Greyson Wheeler.*

I read it again.

Then a third time.

The date was three weeks away. Saturday evening. A rooftop venue in Manhattan. Three hundred guests expected, according to the small insert card listing hotel blocks and parking instructions.

I stood there holding it, my thumb pressed against the gold border, and waited for something to happen inside me. Tears, maybe. Or anger. The sharp crack of a heart breaking, the way it happens in movies when the music swells and the camera closes in.

Nothing came.

From the bedroom, I heard Greyson laugh.

His voice carried easily through the thin walls of our East Village apartment—the apartment I'd been covering two-thirds of the rent on for the past eight months while he was "between promotions." The laugh was loud and loose, the way he sounded after two beers, though I hadn't heard him open the fridge.

"She thinks we're together?" His voice rose with disbelief, then dropped into something crueler. "Bro, she's just paying me back. Free nurse, free maid. Why would I ever marry *her*?"

Another laugh. Longer this time.

I slid the invitation back into his pocket. Smoothed the fabric so it hung exactly the way it had before. Then I walked into the kitchen, pulled a glass from the cabinet, and filled it with water from the tap.

The glass was cold against my palm. I drank slowly, staring at the countertop I'd scrubbed yesterday morning before driving Margaret to her physical therapy appointment. Greyson's coffee mug still sat in the sink. I'd wash it later, I'd thought at the time. After I picked up his mother's prescriptions. After I prepped dinner.

I set the empty glass down and heard him still talking in the other room.

"Yeah, man, the wedding's locked in. Juliet's dad is setting me up with an intro at his firm. This is the move I've been waiting for."

A pause.

"Grace? Nah, she'll be fine. She's got her little makeup thing. She doesn't need me."

I turned off the tap. Dried my hands on the dish towel I'd bought last month to replace the one that had frayed. Folded it into a neat square and hung it back on the oven handle.

By the time Greyson came out of the bedroom, I was sitting on the couch with my laptop open, scrolling through my studio's appointment calendar like nothing had changed.

"Hey," he said, dropping onto the cushion beside me. He smelled like the cologne I'd given him for his birthday. "You find your keys?"

"Not yet," I said.

He kissed the top of my head, already reaching for the remote. "They'll turn up. You probably left them at the studio again."

"Probably."

He turned on a basketball game. I kept scrolling.

That night, after he fell asleep, I got out of bed and walked through the apartment in the dark. I knew every corner by heart. The bookshelf I'd assembled alone because he'd been too busy. The couch we'd bought together, though I'd paid for it. The kitchen table where I'd sat with Margaret, holding her hand through her worst pain days, while Greyson worked late.

I went to the closet and pulled down the box I kept on the top shelf.

Inside were five years of receipts. Rent transfers. Venmo screenshots. Medical co-pays for Margaret's physical therapy. Grocery bills. The $3,200 I'd paid for Greyson's certification exam prep course. I'd saved them all, not because I was planning anything, but because I'd always been careful with money. When you grow up with nothing, you learn to track every dollar.

I sat on the floor and went through them one by one.

By the time the sun came up, I had a number.

$23,247.

I put the receipts back in the box. Slid it back onto the shelf. Went into the bathroom and washed my face, watching the water circle the drain.

In the mirror, I looked the same as I had yesterday.

But I wasn't.

Over the next two days, while Greyson was at work, I packed everything that belonged to me. My makeup kits. My clothes. My grandmother's teacup, the one my mother gave me before she died. My laptop and the external hard drive with all my client files.

I didn't take anything of his. Not the books I'd bought him. Not the kitchen knives I'd paid for. Not even the framed photo of us at his company holiday party, the one where his arm was around my waist and I was smiling like I believed in forever.

I left his key on the kitchen counter, lined up perfectly with the table's edge.

Then I drove back to my studio in Brooklyn, unloaded my car in silence, and locked the door behind me.

I didn't leave a note.

I didn't say goodbye.

I just left.
