After My Boyfriend Chose His Brother’s Widow Over Me Chapter 1

I lit twelve candles for our five-year anniversary. I counted them twice, because five years felt like it deserved more than a handful of flames on a hotel dresser. The room at the Wexford was small but perfect—white linens, a view of the park, a bottle of Sancerre sweating in a silver bucket. I'd bought the lingerie a week ago and hidden it in my gym bag so Caspian wouldn't find it early. Tonight I wanted to give him all of me. Five years, and I'd never let myself be that unguarded.

He showed up right on time, in the navy jacket I liked, holding a bouquet of white ranunculus. "Happy anniversary, baby," he said, and kissed my forehead like I was something breakable and precious. I believed him. That's the part that still makes my stomach turn—how completely I believed him.

We were barely past the second glass of wine, his hand sliding up my thigh, when his phone buzzed on the nightstand. He glanced at it the way you glance at a fly. Then he picked it up.

His whole body changed. Shoulders up, jaw tight.

"What is it?" I asked, already knowing I wouldn't like the answer.

"Raquel's having a panic attack." He was already reaching for his shirt. "She's alone with Milo. I have to go."

"Caspian." I said his name like a question, like maybe if I said it right he'd remember where he was. "It's our anniversary."

"I know, I know, I'm sorry." He wasn't looking at me. He was looking for his other shoe. "She just lost Deandre eight months ago, Isla. You understand that, right?"

I didn't answer. I lay there in twelve candles' worth of light while he dressed in the dark, and when the door clicked shut, the room went so quiet I could hear the wine going flat.

Three days later, he brought soup.

"Raquel made this," he said, setting the bowl in front of me like an offering. "Lobster bisque. She wanted to apologize for anniversary night. Isn't that sweet?"

I stared at the pale orange surface, the little curl of cream on top. "Caspian, I'm allergic to shellfish. You know this. You've known this for five years."

"Just try a little." He nudged the spoon closer. "She made it with love. Come on, don't be dramatic."

I looked at him for a long moment, waiting for the part where he understood what he'd just said. It didn't come. I set the spoon down very carefully, the way you set down something you don't trust yourself not to throw.

After that, I stopped waiting for apologies. I started watching.

Raquel's Instagram told me everything I needed to know, one perfect square at a time. Caspian assembling a bookshelf in her apartment, sleeves rolled up, her son Milo riding his shoulders. Caspian stirring a pot on her stove while she leaned against the counter laughing. The caption under that one: *My rock.* I scrolled through weeks of it, my thumb steady, my face doing nothing at all.

Then a DM slid in, small and polite as a knife between ribs.

*He's so sweet to me,* Raquel wrote. *You're lucky I'm sharing him with you.*

I read it twice. I took a screenshot. I closed the app and called an immigration attorney about London.

I ended it on a Thursday, at a small restaurant in the West Village with candles I didn't light myself this time. I'd rehearsed the words in the shower that morning, in the elevator, in the cab. When I finally said them—*I don't want to do this anymore*—Caspian didn't reach for my hand. He didn't even put down his fork.

"Are you serious right now?" He laughed, short and disbelieving. "You're doing this because of Raquel? She's grieving, Isla. Her husband is dead. You're acting jealous and petty over a woman who lost everything."

"I'm acting like someone who's been asked to disappear for five years," I said. "Every anniversary. Every allergy. Every time she needed you more than I did."

"That's not fair."

"No," I agreed. "It isn't."

He kept talking—something about how I'd changed, how I used to be so easy to love, how I was making this into something it wasn't. I let him talk. I folded my napkin into a neat square and set it beside my plate. I signaled the waiter for the check before Caspian even noticed I'd stopped listening.

Outside, the October air was sharp enough to sting. I didn't look back through the window to see if he was watching me go. Five years of looking back had gotten me a bowl of soup that could have killed me, and a stranger's voice in my head calling me lucky.

I wasn't lucky. I was done.
