"I, Kaden, Alpha of Silverfang, reject you, Arabella, as my mate and Luna."

My mark went cold before he finished the sentence. Not numb. Cold, the way a body goes cold — the warmth bleeding out from the center of the bite scar he had given me only two weeks before, racing outward in a slow expanding ring. Then it went hollow. Like a door closing on an empty room. Like something walking out and not coming back.

Inside my chest, Seraphine — my wolf, quiet, soft-footed Seraphine who had hummed under my skin all day — let out a sound I had never heard from her before. Not a howl. A pulse. One last furious flare of heat, telling me to *stand, stand, stand* — and then she went out. Like a lamp blown across the room by a hand that wasn't mine.

I didn't fall. Not yet.

I did not beg. I had two breaths left in me before my throat closed, and I spent them looking. I looked at every face. I named them in my head as we passed. *Marta, broken wrist, spring of the third year. Devon, wolfsbane exposure, I stayed up forty-one hours. Ilse, pup fever, twins, both lived.* I did not cry. I memorized.

They put me in a holding room. Seventy-two hours later they put me before a tribunal.

Emilia had been busy. Wolfsbane traced to my sealed stores. Three coached witnesses. A written ledger of my supposedly *erratic behavior* in the weeks before the ceremony, in handwriting that wasn't mine but close enough to mine.

I stood with my dead mark and my dead wolf and I said, "I will identify the compound. Thirty seconds. One sample. My nose against the glass, that's all."

Kaden's Alpha tone cracked across the room before I reached the word *all.* "Denied."

The pressure of it slammed my knees down into the stone. I felt my jaw lock around the rest of the sentence. I held there, on the floor, while the tribunal read the verdict above my head.

Seven years.

They locked the collar on me in the same room. Silver. Not the ornamental kind that marks low rank — the dense kind, the suppression kind, with the little burn that finds every channel an aura uses and chokes it down. They needn't have bothered. There was nothing left to suppress. But I felt it work anyway, biting into the place where Seraphine used to be, sealing the door she had already walked out of.

Seven years compresses strangely in memory. What stays is the texture of stone under my palms at three in the morning. The smell of lye. The sound of Emilia's laughter two floors above me, drifting down through the vents. The Delta named Devon, the one whose life I had stayed up forty-one hours to save, stepping over my bucket on his way to breakfast. The cloth in my hands, wrung out exactly, placed exactly. Steady hands. The last thing no one can take.

On the seventh anniversary of the night Kaden said my name and unsaid it, they opened the gate.

I walked out carrying three things: a healer's satchel I had hidden one packet at a time, a small folded record of every formula I had not yet been forced to transcribe for the woman wearing my life, and a memorized map of where the nearest territory line ran.

I did not look back. I crossed the boundary stones at sunrise and kept walking.

Nineteen days later, in a rented coastal cabin in Oregon, with the Pacific gray and steady outside the window and a low light burning in the corner because I cannot sleep in the dark anymore, I stepped out onto the porch to check the herb beds.

The wind shifted.

Silverfang pack-scent. On the road. East, maybe a quarter mile, moving toward the cabin.

My body locked before my mind caught up. My fingers closed around the porch rail, and I heard, very clearly, the sound of car tires slowing on gravel.
