After My Alpha Rejected Me for the Warrior Girl Chapter 1

The mark on my neck went ice-cold at 8:47 p.m., three words before Kannon finished the vow.

I felt it happen in real time — not through memory, not through someone else's mouth, but through the bond itself, thinning like a wire pulled too tight. I stood on the ceremonial platform in the white dress Judith had stitched by hand, the half-formed mark on my collarbone still tingling from where Kannon's teeth had grazed it three nights ago, promising to finish it tonight. The whole pack stood below us in the torchlight, waiting.

Kannon walked toward me. Then he stopped.

His eyes slid past my shoulder, past the platform's edge, to Presley. She stood in her warrior leathers, chin up, and around her throat hung the moonstone Luna pendant. My pendant. The one he'd shown me two years ago and said, *when Ironvale is safe, this is yours.*

"I, Kannon Griffin, Alpha of Ironvale," he said, and his voice carried the Alpha tone, flattening the courtyard into silence, "reject you, Coraline Bennett, as my mate and Luna."

The bond didn't fray. It snapped — like a door slamming shut on an empty room. The half-formed mark tore open under my skin, and I felt blood slide hot down my collarbone before I understood I was bleeding. My wolf let out one silent howl inside my chest, a sound with no voice, and then went still in a way she had never gone still before. My knees buckled. I went down onto the platform boards.

No one moved to catch me.

I dragged myself off the platform on my hands, the silk of my dress catching splinters, and sat in the dirt at its base with my fingers pressed to the wound. The pack parted around me in a wide, careful arc — not kindness, just distance, the way you step around something you don't want on your shoes. Across the courtyard, Presley lifted the pendant off her chest with two fingers and smiled at me, slow and satisfied, before letting it fall back against her skin.

Kannon didn't look at me again. He turned and walked into the pack house with Presley half a step behind him, and the doors closed.

---

By the third day, I had moved out of the pack house into the old caretaker's cabin at the edge of Ironvale's land. It had one working window and a woodstove that smelled like rust. My wolf was a cold ache behind my sternum now, present only the way a missing tooth is present — a gap where something used to be.

The warriors didn't yield the path anymore. I learned to step off it myself, into the wet grass, while they walked past without slowing. Presley had already reorganized my old duties in the pack house — the ledgers, the healer supply logs, the pantry schedules — and she did it loudly, in front of people, explaining each change like she was doing everyone a favor by fixing what I'd apparently broken.

Roland Voss didn't bother hiding his contempt either. I met him outside the supply shed on the fourth morning, arms full of bandaging Judith needed, and he blocked the doorway with his shoulder.

"Healer's requisitions go through Presley now," he said, not quite looking at me. "Pack protocol."

"Since when."

"Since the Alpha said so." He shrugged, like it cost him nothing. "You'll want to get used to asking nicely, Bennett."

I didn't argue. I'd learned in four days that arguing only gave them something to enjoy. I turned around and walked back to the cabin with empty hands, jaw tight, the wound on my neck itching under its bandage.

I could have left. The border was less than two miles from my door, and every hour I stayed cost me a little more skin off my pride. But Judith was in her cottage on the pack's outer edge, alone, seventy years old and stubborn about needing anyone's help — and Ironvale was still, technically, the only shelter she had. Leaving meant leaving her exposed to a pack that no longer had any reason to protect either of us.

So I stayed, and I endured, and I told myself it was temporary.

That evening I walked the back trail to check on her, the way I did every evening now, and found her sitting at her table over a cup of tea she hadn't touched, her hands folded too still around the cup, her face a shade paler than it had been the week before.

"You didn't drink your tea," I said.

Judith looked up, and for just a second, before she smiled and waved it off, I saw something flicker behind her eyes that looked almost like fear.
