After My Alpha Rejected Me for His Pregnant Mistress Chapter 1

The bond went cold at 8:41 on the night of the Winter Solstice Banquet, in the two seconds it took the hall doors to swing open.

I was standing at the edge of the dais where I always stood — not on it — in the gray gown I had mended twice at the left seam. The Luna's chair beside Ronan's throne sat empty, as it had for five years. Four hundred wolves filled the hall, glasses in hand, and they all turned when the doors opened.

Ronan came in with Georgina Snyder on his arm.

She wore Luna white. Floor-length, cut to show the swell of her belly, one hand resting on it like a signature on a contract. Her smile swept the room, every face, every table — and skipped mine the way you skip a stain on the carpet.

My mating mark went cold first. Then empty. Like a door closing on a room nobody lives in anymore.

And under the cold, through the bond, I felt Ronan's emotions settle into something flat and finished. Not guilt. Not even anger. Relief, the way you feel it when you finally throw out a chair you never liked.

I had smelled her on him for eleven weeks. Vanilla and cheap musk, layered into his skin at the throat, the wrists, the collar of every shirt I washed. I had known. I just hadn't known the date.

He took the dais. He never looked at me.

"I, Ronan, Alpha of the Shadowvale Pack," he said, in the Alpha tone, loud enough to bounce off the rafters, "reject you, Violette, as my mate and Luna."

The bond tore.

It was not tearing like cloth. It was silver wire being pulled backward through my ribs, thread by thread, each one snapping somewhere behind my heart. My knees hit the boards. I heard the sound my own throat made and did not recognize it.

And then, deep under the pain, in a place I had never been able to reach in twenty-two years of having nothing there — something moved. Something huge. It turned over once, like a body waking under ice, and it was furious.

I didn't have time to wonder what it was.

Ronan lifted his hand, and Soren Ashby, his Gamma, passed him the brand. Silver, heated white at the tip. I watched the light of it cross Ronan's face.

"The mark is void," he said. "Let it be removed."

He pressed it to my neck.

Silver on a bond-site does not burn like fire. Fire stops at skin. This went through the mark, through the nerve, through whatever piece of my soul had been anchored there, and burned it out at the root. My vision went white. The smell that reached me was my own flesh.

I hit the dais floor and stayed there.

Four hundred wolves. Nobody moved. Nobody spoke. I heard glass being set down on a table, very carefully, by someone who did not want to be noticed.

Georgina stepped around my body — actually around it, gathering her white skirt in one fist so the hem wouldn't touch me — and sat down in the Luna's chair.

From the side of the hall, in her wheelchair, Ruth Ellis nodded. Slow. Satisfied. Five years of medicine I ground by hand at two in the morning, and that was the nod she'd been saving.

I pressed two fingers to the inside of my left wrist. Found the pulse. Still there.

Then I got up.

Not to the doors. Nobody watched where I went, which was the first useful thing they'd ever given me.

I took the service stairs to the pack house basement, past the boiler, to the wall behind the old shelving where I had opened up the stone five years ago in the dark and never told a living soul. The control node sat in the hollow — a slate disc, three master stones seated in it, sixty-one threads of copper wire running out through the foundation and into the ground, and from there to every marker I had buried around Shadowvale's border.

Healing frequencies. Wolfsbane-resistant. Three years of cross-referencing rogue attack patterns to get the spacing right. Not one wolf in this pack knew the stones existed. Ronan had spent five years telling allies that Shadowvale's borders were clean because Shadowvale's Alpha was strong.

I knelt on the concrete and started disconnecting.

I did not rush. I unseated each thread the way I'd set it, one at a time, and I felt the network go quiet under my hands like a held breath letting go. When it was dead, I pried the three master stones out of the slate and put them in my coat pocket. Nobody left in this territory could read them. Nobody left could carve new ones.

Upstairs in the whelping room, the cull list was taped to the door for dawn. One name on it. Runt, male, too small.

I put him inside my coat against my chest. He was the size of a loaf of bread and he didn't struggle. He just pushed his nose into the burn on my neck and went still.

"Frost," I told him. "That's what you're called now."

One pack of belongings. No note. I crossed the boundary line at 4:52 in the morning and the last thing I heard from Shadowvale was music, still playing.

I didn't go far. There was a closed gas station on the county road, two miles past the marker, and I sat in the doorway of it with my back to the brick and Frost asleep in my coat, and I waited.

It took forty-one hours.

The first howl came out of the tree line to the north at dusk on the second day — long, wrong, rogue. Then three more. Then a sound I knew: the outpost alarm at Ridge Three, which had never once been sounded in five years, cutting off halfway through.

Headlights tore down the county road. Soren's truck, taking the turn too wide, gravel spraying. He was half out the window, shouting at somebody on the line, voice cracked raw.

"— there's nothing THERE, I'm telling you the stones are gone, the whole line reads dead —" A pause. "No. No, tell the Luna the Omegas can't patch a line they've never seen —"

Behind him, in the dark over Shadowvale, a rogue howled. Then another. Then a dozen.
