After My Alpha Rejected Me for Another Woman Chapter 1

The bond broke at exactly 10:47 on a Thursday morning, three minutes after Jonathan opened his mouth.

I stood on the ceremonial platform in the dress Theodora had selected—ivory silk that felt like armor until it didn't—and watched his eyes slide past me to the third row. To her. Alexis Carter sat there with her legs crossed, her mouth curved in something that wasn't quite a smile. The scent of her perfume reached me even from that distance: roses and something chemical underneath, sharp enough to cut.

Jonathan ascended the platform. He didn't look at me. The crowd—hundreds of wolves from a dozen packs, visiting Alphas in formal dress, Betas with their hands folded—went silent in that particular way that means everyone is watching.

My wolf stirred inside me, a faint pressure I'd felt only twice before in my life. Something like hope. Something like recognition.

Then Jonathan spoke.

"I, Jonathan, Alpha of Silverfang, reject you, Dakota Ramos, as my mate."

His Alpha tone rolled through the hall like a physical force. Every wolf heard it biologically, the command embedded in the frequency. The half-formed mark on my neck—the one that had been warming for three days, the one I'd pressed my fingers against in the mirror this morning and dared to believe meant belonging—split open.

Not metaphorically. Physically.

The bond tore itself apart inside my flesh. I felt the mark go cold first, then hollow, like a door slamming shut in an empty room. My knees buckled. I hit the platform hard, palms flat against polished wood, and the scream that came out of me wasn't a sound I'd ever made before. It was my wolf, half-formed and ancient, howling at something being ripped away before it could take root.

The pain was—

There's no good word for it. Severance. Amputation. A part of me that had started to grow was being cut out while still alive.

I convulsed. My vision whited out at the edges. Somewhere far away, I heard the crowd's collective inhale, the rustle of fabric as people shifted in their seats but did not move to help.

Jonathan stepped over me.

I felt his shoe pass inches from my hand. He descended the platform, and through the haze of pain I watched him walk down the center aisle. Alexis rose from her seat. He offered her his arm. She took it, draping herself against him like a coat, and they walked out together through the main doors.

The crowd watched them go. Then, slowly, they turned back to look at me.

I was still on my knees on the platform, one hand pressed against my neck where the mark had gone dead and cold. My wolf let out a sound inside my skull—not a howl this time but a whimper, something small and wounded retreating into a space I couldn't reach.

Someone finally moved. Theodora's healer, Renata, crossed the hall and climbed the platform steps. She didn't touch me. She crouched beside me and said, very quietly, "Can you stand?"

I nodded. I couldn't speak yet. My throat was raw.

She helped me to my feet. My legs shook. The crowd was still watching. I looked out at them—Alphas in the front rows, Betas and Gammas behind them, Omegas pressed against the back walls—and not one of them met my eyes.

Renata guided me off the platform and out through a side door. The last thing I saw before the door closed was Marcus Webb, Jonathan's Beta, standing near the exit with his arms crossed. He was smiling.

---

The healer's ward smelled like antiseptic and wolfsbane salve. Renata sat me on a cot and examined the mark on my neck without comment. Her fingers were cool and clinical. After a moment, she stepped back.

"It's severed cleanly," she said. "No infection risk. The scar will be permanent."

I touched my neck. The skin was smooth and cold, like touching metal in winter. The mark that had been forming there—Jonathan's mark, the one I'd stupidly let myself believe in—was gone. What remained was a hollow outline, a ghost of something that never finished.

"Will it hurt?" I asked. My voice came out hoarse.

"Always," Renata said. She didn't soften it. "Rejected bonds leave scars that don't heal. You'll feel it every time he's near. Phantom pain."

I nodded. I didn't cry. I pressed my left hand over the scar and held it there, feeling the coldness seep into my palm.

The door opened. Marcus Webb stepped in, holding a folded piece of paper. He didn't knock.

"From Alpha Jonathan," he said, and dropped the note on the cot beside me.

I unfolded it. Silverfang Pack letterhead. Jonathan's handwriting, confident and looping:

*A wolfless gutter-fish not worth marking. Remove her from pack territory by dawn.*

I read it twice. The words didn't change.

Marcus was still standing there, waiting for a reaction. I folded the note carefully, creased it along the original lines, and set it on the table beside the cot. Then I looked up at him.

"You can go," I said.

He blinked. "You have until—"

"I heard you. You can go."

He left. The door clicked shut.

I sat alone in the healer's ward with my hand pressed against the dead mark on my neck and Jonathan's note on the table beside me. My wolf stirred once—a faint pressure, not a voice, not yet—and then went silent.

I didn't cry.

I picked up the note, folded it again, and slipped it into the pocket of my dress.

Then I waited.
