At the Moon Banquet, the Black Moon Pack toasts a prosperity bought with my family's money, and I feel the familiar ache behind my ribs. I am the perfect Luna: managing seating charts, redirecting a visiting Gamma, smiling for Northridge elders. Invisible. Then my Alpha parades his mistress before every visiting pack, and the betrayal cuts deeper than any claw. I am done being the polished ornament who keeps his peace. After My Alpha Paraded His Mistress, I Walked Away Forever Chapter 1

The Moon Banquet was in full swing when I felt the familiar ache settle behind my ribs.

I stood at the edge of the grand hall, silver gown catching the chandelier light, and watched the Black Moon Pack celebrate another season of prosperity. Alphas from neighboring territories mingled with our warriors. Betas exchanged political pleasantries over champagne. The air hummed with laughter and the rich scent of roasted meat.

None of them knew the prosperity was bought with my family's money.

I adjusted the seating chart in my hands, redirecting a visiting Gamma away from a rival pack's table. Crisis averted. My heels clicked softly as I crossed the marble floor to greet an elder from the Northridge Pack. I smiled. I nodded. I made small talk about trade routes and upcoming treaties.

It was my ninety-ninth performance.

"Luna Adele." The elder's wife touched my arm gently. "You look tired, dear."

"I'm fine," I said, keeping my voice light. "Just making sure everyone is comfortable."

She studied me for a moment too long, her eyes too knowing. Then she squeezed my hand and moved away.

I exhaled slowly. My natural scent—crisp winter pine—had faded under the oppressive cloud of Oscar's cologne. He always wore too much. Something sharp and heavy that clung to everything, marking his territory even when he wasn't in the room.

But tonight, he was very much in the room.

I felt his presence before I saw him. The Alpha aura rolled across the hall like a wave, making the younger wolves straighten their spines. I turned.

Oscar stood at the high table, tall and commanding in a black suit that fit him perfectly. His dark hair was slicked back. His jaw was sharp. He looked every inch the powerful Alpha everyone believed he was.

Beside him stood Luciana.

She wore red. A dress cut so low it barely clung to her shoulders. Her blonde hair cascaded down her back in perfect waves. And her scent—gods, her scent—filled the hall like someone had dumped a flower shop into the air. Sickly sweet. Cloying. Deliberate.

She smiled at Oscar. He smiled back.

The hall quieted.

"Everyone," Oscar's voice boomed, amplified by his Alpha tone. "I want to introduce you to Luciana. She's been an exceptional warrior for our pack. Tonight, she sits at my table."

Whispers erupted. Heads turned. Eyes found me.

I didn't move.

Luciana's smile widened. She slid into the seat beside Oscar—the seat reserved for honored guests. Or mates.

Oscar's gaze cut across the room and locked onto me. His eyes were cold. Calculating. Waiting.

"Adele." His Alpha tone sliced through the noise like a blade. Every wolf in the room felt it. The command. The dominance. The unspoken threat. "Come here."

I set down the seating chart. My hands didn't shake. I crossed the hall slowly, heels tapping against marble, while two hundred pairs of eyes tracked my every step.

When I reached the high table, Oscar gestured to the wine bottle in front of him.

"Pour Luciana's glass," he said. His tone was casual, but the command underneath it pressed against every wolf's instincts. "It's an honor to serve our finest warriors."

Silence fell like a curtain.

Luciana tilted her head, her smirk barely hidden. She pushed her empty glass forward.

I picked up the bottle. The weight of it was familiar. I'd poured wine at a hundred banquets. My face remained smooth. Unreadable. I filled her glass to the perfect level, not a drop spilled.

"Thank you, Luna," Luciana purred, her voice dripping with false sweetness.

I set the bottle down. I didn't look at Oscar. I didn't look at anyone.

I turned and walked back to my post.

Behind me, the whispers started again. Louder this time. Sharper.

I spent the rest of the banquet putting out fires. A visiting Alpha asked pointed questions about Oscar's "guest." I deflected with grace. A Beta's mate cornered me near the dessert table, eyes full of pity. I smiled and changed the subject. An elder from our own pack touched my shoulder and said nothing, but his expression said everything.

By the time the last guest left, my face ached from smiling.

I climbed the stairs to my private chambers and locked the door behind me.

The room was quiet. Too quiet. I crossed to the fireplace and knelt beside the hidden panel in the floor. My fingers found the latch. The compartment opened.

Inside was a leather journal.

I pulled it out and sat on the floor, skirt pooling around me. The journal was worn, its pages thick with ink. I opened it to the last entry—number ninety-eight—and read my own handwriting.

*He paraded another she-wolf at the Spring Gathering. Made me stand beside them for the pack photo.*

I turned to a blank page and picked up my pen.

*Number ninety-nine. Moon Banquet. He made me serve her wine in front of the entire pack.*

I stared at the words. Then I flipped back to the very first page.

My mate vow. Written ten years ago in careful, hopeful script.

*I, Adele of the Silverveil Pack, accept you, Oscar of the Black Moon Pack, as my mate. I vow to stand beside you, to honor our bond, to love you through every season.*

I tore the page out slowly. The sound of ripping paper filled the room.

I held it over the candle on the mantle. The flame licked the edge. The paper curled and blackened.

Then I dropped the entire journal into the fireplace.

The fire caught quickly. Pages curled and crumbled. Ten years of betrayals turned to ash. I watched it burn and felt nothing. No tears. No rage. Just a cold, empty calm.

The door slammed open.

Oscar stood in the doorway, his Alpha aura flooding the room like a storm. His eyes were wild. Furious.

"What the hell was that?" he snarled. "You embarrassed me tonight. You didn't even react. You just stood there like a corpse."

I rose slowly, brushing ash from my hands.

He crossed the room in three strides and grabbed my arm. His Alpha tone crashed over me like a tidal wave. "Kneel."

I looked at him.

And felt absolutely nothing.

No pull. No compulsion. No instinct to obey.

For the first time in ten years, the bond was silent.

I met his eyes with the calm detachment of someone who had already left.
