After My Alpha Left My Ceremony for Her Chapter 1

The Silverfang Pack banquet hall smelled like roasted venison and fresh roses. Someone had strung fairy lights across the vaulted ceiling. The head table was covered in white linen. My Come of Age Ceremony dress was deep blue, carefully chosen, fitted at the waist. I sat in the center seat with my hands folded in my lap and my heart doing something frantic against my ribs.

This was supposed to be my night. The night every she-wolf dreams about. The night you finally catch your mate's scent and the Moon Goddess confirms what your heart already knows.

I had known for years. It was Maverick. It had to be Maverick.

He sat three seats down, broad-shouldered and commanding in his formal jacket, his silver wolf aura radiating authority even at rest. Maverick Knight. Future Alpha of Silverfang. The male I had loved quietly, carefully, for longer than I could remember.

He wasn't looking at me. He was laughing at something Beta Carver said, his glass raised mid-toast. The pack members around us were loud and cheerful. Someone clinked a fork against crystal. The sound rang out sharp.

I waited for him to turn. To meet my eyes. To feel what I felt.

He didn't.

Then his expression changed. His eyes went distant. Unfocused. The way wolves look when someone mind-links them urgently.

I knew that look. I had seen it a hundred times before.

Maverick stood abruptly, his chair scraping back. He set his glass down without finishing the toast. He didn't say a word to anyone at the table. He just turned and walked toward the exit at a near-run, his jacket flaring behind him.

I sat very still. My wolf, who had been stirring for the first time all evening, went silent.

Someone at the far end of the table asked if everything was all right. Beta Carver made a joke about Alpha heirs and their dramatics. People laughed. The toast continued without Maverick.

I smiled. I nodded when someone congratulated me. I thanked the pack members who approached with gifts. I stayed in my seat through the entire ceremony like I was supposed to.

I did not cry.

I had learned a long time ago that crying in public only made people uncomfortable. And uncomfortable people looked away faster.

When the banquet finally ended, I walked back to the pack house alone. My heels clicked on the stone path. The fairy lights behind me blurred into soft halos. I let myself into the side entrance and went straight to the kitchen.

It was dark and quiet. I climbed onto the counter and sat with my back against the cabinets, my dress pooling around me. The marble was cool under my palms.

I wasn't thinking about anything specific. I was just sitting. Breathing. Letting the night finish itself without me.

That's when I heard footsteps.

"Sitting in the dark is a choice," a woman's voice said from the doorway. "But it's not a good one."

I looked up. Ophelia Knight stood in the threshold, still dressed in her formal gown, her silver hair pinned elegantly. She was Maverick's mother. The former Luna of Silverfang. Sharp-eyed and impossible to lie to.

She crossed the kitchen and flipped on the small light above the stove. It cast a warm, low glow.

"You don't have to say anything," Ophelia said, leaning against the counter across from me. "I already know."

I swallowed. "Know what?"

"That my son is a fool."

The bluntness of it startled me. I blinked.

Ophelia's expression didn't soften. "He left your ceremony to run after Francesca. Again. And you sat through the rest of the night like nothing happened. Which tells me you've had practice."

I didn't answer. There wasn't anything to say that wouldn't sound like I was making excuses for him.

"You've spent years loving a male who doesn't see you," Ophelia continued. Her voice was calm. Matter-of-fact. "And you've done it quietly because you thought if you were patient enough, good enough, he would finally notice. But he won't, Ella. Not because you're lacking. Because he's not looking."

My throat tightened. I stared at the floor.

"I'm not here to pity you," Ophelia said. "I'm here to offer you a way out."

I looked up at her.

"There's a male in Moonveil territory," she said. "Lorenzo King. Reclusive. His wolf is dormant. He needs help reconnecting. I need someone capable, someone perceptive, to manage the situation. It's temporary. Structured. You'd have your own space. Your own work. And you'd be far enough from this pack house that you could finally breathe."

I stared at her. "Why me?"

"Because you're wasting your life here," Ophelia said simply. "And I'm tired of watching it happen."

She pulled a folded piece of paper from her clutch and set it on the counter between us. An address. A phone number.

"Think about it," she said. "Or don't think. Just go."

She left the kitchen without waiting for my answer.

I sat there for a long time, staring at the paper. Then I climbed down from the counter, picked it up, and walked upstairs to my room.

I packed a single bag before sunrise. One suitcase. Practical clothes. My favorite mug. The carved soapstone wolf I'd made at camp when I was thirteen, which I kept on my nightstand for reasons I'd never examined too closely.

I left a note on the kitchen table for my parents. It said I was taking a temporary placement in Moonveil and would call when I was settled. I didn't mention Maverick. I didn't mention Francesca.

I was in my car and out of Silverfang territory before my sister woke up.

There was no farewell. No ceremony. No one to wave me off.

The absence of it felt symmetrical. Appropriate.

And for the first time in years, I felt something that wasn't devotion or longing or the quiet ache of being overlooked.

I felt the beginning of something else.

Lorenzo King's house was modern and understated, tucked into the trees near a lake. The driveway was gravel. The front door was painted charcoal grey.

I knocked.

The male who answered was not what I expected.

He was tall, lean, devastatingly handsome in a way that felt almost unfair. Dark hair. Sharp jawline. Eyes that assessed me with the kind of precision that made my wolf stir faintly for the first time since the ceremony.

He leaned against the doorframe with a protein bar in one hand and an expression of studied indifference.

"You must be the caretaker," he said.

"Manager," I corrected.

"Right." He took a bite of the protein bar. "Ophelia sent you."

"She did."

"To fix my dormant wolf."

"To help you reconnect," I said carefully.

He smiled. It didn't reach his eyes. "Good luck with that."

He stepped aside to let me in.

The house was clean, sparsely furnished, and smelled faintly of coffee and something woodsy I couldn't place. I set my bag down in the entryway and pulled out the leather journal Ophelia had given me.

"Reconnection journal," I said, holding it up. "You're supposed to write in it daily. Observations. Feelings. Progress."

Lorenzo looked at the journal like I'd just handed him a live snake.

"I'll make you a deal," he said. "You cook me a real meal—something that isn't delivered or out of a box—and I'll write in your journal."

I raised an eyebrow. "That's the deal?"

"That's the deal."

I looked at him for a long moment. Then I said, "Lasagna."

"Excuse me?"

"I'll make you lasagna. You write three full pages."

"Three sentences," he countered.

"Three paragraphs."

"Three sentences. Final offer."

I sighed. "Fine."

The lasagna took two hours. It was excellent. Layers of pasta, ricotta, marinara, mozzarella browned perfectly on top. I plated it and set it in front of him at the kitchen island.

Lorenzo ate in silence. When he finished, he wiped his mouth with a napkin, picked up a pen, and wrote exactly three sentences in the journal.

*Day one. The new manager makes decent lasagna. My wolf remains unimpressed.*

I read it over his shoulder and resisted the urge to throw the journal at his head.

"You're impossible," I said.

"You're persistent," he replied.

Our bickering domestic routine had officially begun.
