After My Alpha Left Me Dying for His Mistress Chapter 1

I almost missed it.

It was late, close to midnight, and the packhouse had gone quiet. Most nights I stayed in the study long after Mason went to bed, working through Luna administrative records—patrol schedules, supply orders, grievance logs from pack members too nervous to bring things directly to an Alpha. I'd been doing it for seven years. It was the kind of work that didn't get noticed unless it stopped.

I had a stack of treasury disbursement files open on the desk when it happened.

A mind-link brushed the edge of my consciousness—not directed at me, just grazing past like a signal meant for someone else. That happens sometimes in a large pack. Frequencies bleed. I would have let it go, would have closed my mind and moved on, except that I recognized the voice.

Mason.

Low. Warm. Intimate in a way I hadn't heard him speak in months.

*I've been thinking about you all day.*

Three seconds. Maybe four. Then the link snapped shut.

I sat very still.

Deep inside me, my wolf lurched upright. She didn't growl. She didn't snarl. She just stood there in the dark of my mind with her ears flat and her eyes wide, and that silence was worse than any sound she could have made.

I set down my pen. I looked at the disbursement files without seeing them. I thought about the way his voice had sounded—easy, unguarded, the way you only sound with someone who already knows all your soft places.

I thought about Kenzie.

I don't know why her name came first. I pushed it away immediately. That was insane. That was paranoia. Kenzie was my best friend. We'd known each other for ten years. She'd held my hand in the Healer's den after the wolfsbane poisoning, when the Healer told me quietly, carefully, that I would never carry a pup. She had cried with me.

I picked up my pen and finished the page.

---

He came home just after one in the morning.

I was still at the desk when I heard the front door. I listened to his footsteps cross the foyer, heard him pause at the kitchen—probably pouring water—and then he appeared in the study doorway, still in his patrol jacket, hair slightly damp from the night air.

"You're still up," he said.

"Almost done." I smiled at him.

He crossed the room and bent to kiss the top of my head, and that's when I smelled it.

Floral. Sweet and heavy and wrong, layered just beneath his collar where someone might have leaned close. It wasn't pine and frost—that was my scent, the one that should have been the only one on him. This was something else entirely. Something warm and cloying, like jasmine left too long in a closed room.

Every nerve in my body went electric.

"How was patrol?" I asked. My voice came out perfectly steady.

"Quiet." He straightened, rolled his neck. "Eastern border's clean. Nothing to report."

"Good." I reached up and touched his cheek—just briefly, just enough to seem normal—and felt him relax under my hand. "Go to bed. I'll be up soon."

He didn't notice anything. Of course he didn't. He never looked at me closely enough to see.

I waited until I heard his breathing slow through the mate bond, that faint ambient hum that told me he was asleep. Then I closed the files, put on my coat, and walked out of the packhouse into the dark.

---

Ben Hawkins lived on the pack's eastern edge, in a cabin set back from the tree line. No packhouse politics, no Alpha's shadow. Just enough distance to think clearly.

I'd always respected that about him.

The light was still on when I got there. I knocked once. He opened the door in a worn flannel shirt, took one look at my face, and stepped aside without a word.

I sat at his kitchen table and told him exactly two things: what I'd heard in the mind-link, and what I'd smelled on Mason's collar.

I didn't cry. I didn't speculate. I just laid out the facts the way I'd learned to lay out grievance reports—clean, precise, stripped of everything that could be dismissed as emotion.

Ben listened without interrupting. When I finished, he was quiet for a moment.

"How long do you need the answer by?" he asked.

That was all. Not *are you sure*, not *maybe there's an explanation*. Just that.

"Take the time you need to do it right," I said. "I only want to do this once."

He nodded. He reached for a notepad on the counter and started writing.

I walked home through the dark, through my own territory, under a moon that had never felt so indifferent. My wolf walked with me, silent and watchful, her grief already hardening into something else.

Something that had edges.
