After My Alpha Chose Her, I Became the Lycan Queen Chapter 1

The full moon bathed the Whispering Pines Pack House in ethereal light as I stood before the ceremonial altar. My heart thundered against my ribs, each beat echoing the six years I'd spent building a life here—away from my father's suffocating expectations, away from the political machinations of the Obsidian Claw Pack.

"You look beautiful," Elena Hayes whispered, adjusting the silver circlet nestled in my hair. Jake's mother smiled warmly, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "Tonight, you'll finally be officially part of our family."

I squeezed her hands, unable to speak past the lump in my throat. After years of suppressing my Alpha aura, of working in the pack kitchen alongside ordinary she-wolves, I would finally step into my rightful place beside Jake. Not as the daughter of a powerful Alpha, but as a woman who had chosen her own path.

The crowd parted as Jake approached, resplendent in ceremonial leathers adorned with the pack's emblem. His eyes found mine across the distance, and the love I saw there made my breath catch.

"Ready?" he murmured, taking my hands in his.

I nodded, unable to form words as the ancient ritual began. The pack elder's voice rose in the night air, invoking the Moon Goddess's blessing upon our union.

"Under the light of the full moon, we gather to witness the sacred bond between Future Alpha Jake Hayes and his chosen mate, Ellie Stewart..."

As Jake and I faced each other, something shifted in the air between us. A golden thread of energy snapped into place, connecting our souls in ways I'd never experienced before. The mate bond—that sacred, unbreakable tether that every werewolf dreams of feeling—blazed to life within me.

"I feel it," Jake whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "Ellie, I can feel your soul."

So could I. His presence flooded my consciousness—his joy, his devotion, his absolute certainty that we belonged together. This was what I'd fled my heritage to find: not a political arrangement, but a true connection.

"By the power of the Moon Goddess," the elder continued, "these two souls are joined as one."

Jake stepped closer, his hands framing my face with reverence. "I choose you," he murmured, his lips brushing against my ear. "Only you, forever."

My eyes closed as he leaned toward my neck, where his mark would forever bind us together. The crowd held its collective breath, witnessing the sacred moment.

Then came the scream.

Piercing, primal, and utterly devastating to the ceremony's sanctity.

"NO!"

The crowd erupted in chaos as Kyla Bell collapsed to the ground, her body convulsing violently. Her eyes rolled back in her head as she thrashed against the dirt.

"Rogues!" she shrieked, her voice breaking with terror. "They're attacking me again! I can feel them in my head!"

Pack members scrambled away from her, mothers shielding pups with their bodies while warriors surged forward protectively.

"Kyla!" Jake's voice cracked with concern. He froze mid-motion, his lips inches from my unmarked skin.

I reached for him, desperate to maintain our connection. "Jake, it's the ceremony—"

But his eyes had already darted to Kyla's writhing form. I watched in horror as the golden thread between us stretched thin, threatened by his divided attention.

"Alpha, please!" Kyla sobbed, her performance flawless in its desperation. "I'm dying! The rogues from last month—they've found me again!"

The crowd's panic intensified. Warriors formed a protective circle around her while Jake stood paralyzed between us.

"Jake," I pleaded, feeling our bond flicker like a candle in the wind.

His shoulders straightened with resolve that had nothing to do with our sacred moment. When he spoke, his voice carried across the clearing—the voice of an Alpha, not my mate.

"A pack member's life comes first," he announced to the stunned assembly. "The ceremony will have to wait."

Without another word, he strode to Kyla's side and scooped her into his arms. Her eyes met mine over his shoulder—for just a fraction of a second—and I could have sworn I saw triumph flash across her face before she buried it against Jake's chest.

"Take her to the infirmary," he ordered a nearby Delta. Then, without looking back at me, he added, "We'll reschedule when Kyla's stable."

The crowd dispersed in murmurs and concerned glances, leaving me standing alone at the altar. The golden thread between Jake and me snapped with an almost audible crack, leaving a hollow ache in my chest.

I stood frozen, humiliation burning through me as hundreds of eyes witnessed my abandonment. The whispers started immediately—pitying, curious, judgmental.

Then my phone buzzed with a message. I knew who it was before I even looked.

"Three days," my father's voice echoed through our mind-link, cold and unforgiving. "Mark your mate by the next full moon, or my warriors will drag you to the Lycan Prince. Your choice, little wolf."

The ultimatum hung in the air like a guillotine blade, and I realized with sickening clarity that my carefully constructed freedom had just crumbled to dust.
