After My Alpha Cast Me Out, I Became Royalty Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:47 on a Wednesday night, three feet from the bonfire.

I smelled her on him first. Vanilla and something sweeter, cloying, layered thick across his neck where my mark should have been the only scent. The gathered pack pressed close around the fire, faces bright with anticipation they thought I couldn't read. I'd mapped every wolf here. Trained half of them. Kept them alive through a contamination they still didn't know existed.

"The eastern perimeter," I said, stepping forward with my intelligence journal open in my hand. "Brinley's patrol missed three breach points. I've marked them here—"

"Enough." Chance's voice cracked through the clearing like a whip. Alpha tone, sharp and deliberate, hit me square in the chest and drove me back two steps. My wolf—silent for so long I'd stopped expecting her—stirred with a low snarl that had nowhere to go.

The pack went still.

Brinley stepped into the firelight. Wide eyes. Trembling hands. The same performance she'd been running for months, and I was the only one who'd bothered to map the gaps in it. She looked at Chance like he was the only shelter in a storm, and his jaw tightened.

I knew what was coming. I'd known since I found her scent on his jacket two weeks ago and said nothing. Since I caught them at the northern border and he told me I was imagining things. Since the ranked wolves started averting their eyes when I walked past.

I should have left then.

"I, Chance, Alpha of the Ironridge Pack," he said, and his voice was colder than I'd ever heard it, precise in a way he'd never been precise with me, "reject you, Colette, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck split open.

Not metaphorically. Not gently. It tore from the inside out, ice flooding the space where the bond used to live, and my wolf released a howl that had no voice—silent, furious, reverberating through my bones with nowhere to go. I dropped to my knees on the packed earth. My hands hit the ground. The journal slipped from my fingers.

The fire snapped. Someone's breath caught. No one moved.

I looked up. The Beta stood at Chance's shoulder, face blank, saying nothing. The Gamma studied the ground. The Healer I'd worked beside for two years folded her arms and looked away. Brinley accepted the Luna crest from Chance's hand, and the firelight caught the new metal like a promise.

My wolf snarled again, stronger this time, pushing against the inside of my ribs. I forced myself upright. Refused to stay down in front of wolves I'd bled for. The dead mark throbbed cold on my neck. I pressed two fingers to it without thinking, felt nothing, and dropped my hand.

I picked up my journal. Turned. Walked.

No one followed me.

The Luna suite was already stripped. Furniture gone. Curtains down. My clothes shoved into a single bag by the door like trash waiting for collection. I knelt in the center of the empty room and found it on the floor—my grandfather's moonstone pendant, the only thing he'd ever given me, ground to fragments under a deliberate boot print.

Not moved. Not accidentally stepped on. Crushed.

I gathered the pieces into my palm. They cut my skin. I didn't feel it. The bond scar pulsed cold and empty, and somewhere deep in my chest my wolf circled, restless and newly awake, with nowhere to direct what she felt.

I placed the Luna crest on the threshold. Tucked my intelligence journal inside the lining of my cloak—the only thing I was taking—and stood. The pendant shards I left on the floor. There was nothing to save.

I walked out of the suite. Down the hall. Through the pack house. No one spoke to me. No one met my eyes. At the edge of the territory I stopped at the primary water source and dismantled the last neutralization station—pulled the filtration compounds, capped the antidote supply, erased every trace of the protocol I'd been running alone for two years. No one in Ironridge knew it existed. No one would understand what was coming until the warriors started to sicken.

I stepped across the border into open land. The dead scar on my neck pulsed once, cold and final. My wolf stirred again—faint, formless, furious—and for the first time in my life, I felt her fully.

I didn't look back.

By dawn I was standing at Silvercrest's border checkpoint, facing a Gamma twice my size with a war-map in my hands. "I need to speak to Prince Declan," I said. "I have intelligence on the Ashveil infiltration network. Mapped routes. Operative placements. Six packs."

The Gamma—Silas, his name was Silas—studied me for a long moment. Took in the dead mark on my neck, the cloak with no pack insignia, the journal I held like a weapon. He didn't ask if I was running. He didn't ask what happened.

He opened the gate.

Declan's war room smelled like cedar and old paper. I spread my journal open on the table—routes, patterns, vulnerabilities cross-referenced across territories most Alphas didn't know existed—and presented it like a closed case. No preamble. No story. Just the work.

Declan studied it in silence. His presence filled the room without effort—Lycan Prince, heir to the King, the kind of authority that didn't need to announce itself. He looked up at me. His eyes were dark, steady, unreadable.

"This is comprehensive," he said quietly.

"It's accurate."

He pinned the maps to the wall. Formalized a strategic pact before the session ended. I turned to leave and felt his gaze follow me to the door—not intrusive, not demanding, just... present.

I didn't know yet that his wolf had already named me.

I didn't know yet that everything was about to invert.
