After I Left Them, My Husband and Son Beg Me to Come Back Chapter 1

I woke up at four in the morning to bake a cake.

The first one sank in the middle. I slid it into the trash, wiped the counter, and started over. By the time the sun came up, my back ached and my hands smelled like vanilla and butter.

Worth it. It was Ryan's tenth birthday.

I held the cake level in both hands as I carried it into the living room, ten candles leaning left, wax already pooling at the edges.

"Ryan," I said. "Look. Make a wish."

He didn't turn around. He was sitting on the couch with Sophia, her hand resting on his shoulder like she'd put it there years ago and never taken it off.

"Mom," he said, "why can't you be like Aunt Sophia?"

The candles kept burning. My arms stopped moving.

"She plays with me. She takes me to the park. She doesn't yell."

"I don't yell," I said.

"You do. You're boring." He finally looked at me, and his eyes were flat and calm, the way a child's eyes go when he's practiced a sentence in his head. "I hate you."

The frosting was sliding against the paper plate. A drop of wax hit my thumb.

"Ryan," Sophia said. "You can't talk to your mother like that."

She pulled him into her arms while she said it. Her chin rested on his hair. Over the top of his head, she looked at me, and the corner of her mouth moved — not quite a smile, but close enough.

He hugged her back. He hugged her the way he used to hug me, when he was four and couldn't sleep without my hand on his back.

On the couch, my husband Ethan hadn't looked up from his phone.

I set the cake on the table. The candles were still lit, so I blew them out myself, one by one, with my mouth.

"Ten years old," my mother-in-law said from her chair. Margaret had a way of talking without ever raising her voice. "A real mother doesn't raise a son who hates her. Look at Sophia. Now look at you."

I looked at Sophia. Pale pink blouse, clean nails, hair she'd had done on Wednesday. She'd brought Ryan a remote-control car. He hadn't touched it. He hadn't touched my gift either — the drone I'd saved for since March, hidden in the closet for two months.

"Did you get him a bike?" Margaret asked Sophia.

"A scooter. He picked it out himself."

"See? That's how you raise a child. You listen to him."

I picked up the knife and cut the first slice, because somebody had to, and because if I stood there any longer my hands would start shaking.

For eight years I'd had a job I was good at. I'd had my own money and my own desk and a title on a door. Then Ryan got sick and wouldn't eat and cried until I came home, and Ethan said, *One of us should be here.* He didn't say which one. So I quit, and I learned to cook, and I made the lunches and the appointments and the birthday cakes at four in the morning while the rest of this house slept.

Sophia was Ethan's colleague's wife, then his colleague's ex-wife, then just Sophia. She came over for dinner. She took Margaret to tea on Sundays. She took Ryan to the amusement park twice last summer and came back with photos that went straight onto Ethan's phone.

That was the whole trick. She never had to do the hard part.

At seven, I started clearing the plates. Nobody offered to help. Ryan fell asleep on Sophia's arm. Ethan finally put his phone down.

"Nora."

I looked up.

"Sophia's been exhausted lately. Her place is a mess, there's construction on her street, she's not sleeping."

"So?" I said.

"So I told her she can stay here. Just for a while."

"For how long?"

He picked up his glass, drank, put it down. "Move to the guest room. Just until she's back on her feet."

I held the stack of plates. Cake crumbs on the top one, three forks, a smear of pink frosting.

"Ethan," I said. "It's his birthday."

"I know. Don't make a thing out of it."

The clock in the hallway ticked. It was the one thing in this house that never asked anything of me.

"Okay," I said.

He blinked. Eight years of marriage, and I'd never once given him that word on the first try. He waited for the second half — the argument, the tears, the reason. I turned around and carried the plates into the kitchen.

Behind me, footsteps pounded down the hall, and the bedroom door flew open.

"Dad! Dad!"

"What?"

Ryan's voice, loud with happiness, the way it used to sound when he ran to tell me about a bug he'd found in the yard.

"I want Sophia to live with us forever!"

My hand closed around the edge of the sink.

Ethan laughed.

"Okay," he said.

I stood over the dishes and listened to my son cheer.

Later, when the house went quiet, I opened the closet and pulled down my suitcase. I put my toothbrush in it, and three pairs of socks, and a shirt I used to wear to work that still smelled faintly of my old office.

That's when my phone lit up on the nightstand. One new voicemail. The number was one I'd deleted twice and never forgotten.

I stared at it for a long time. Then I set the phone face down and promised myself the same thing I'd promised in the kitchen, with soap still on my wrists.

Tomorrow, I would stop being polite.
