After I Learned My Groom Only Loved My Heart Chapter 1

The safe in Callen's study opens with six numbers I know better than my own birthday — his mother's. I only wanted my grandmother's ring, tucked behind the passports for safekeeping until the wedding. Three days. That's all that was left.

My fingers found the ring box first. Then they found the journal.

Leather, soft with handling, the words FOR SKYE pressed into the cover in gold that had started to flake. I told myself to put it back. I didn't.

Inside were five years of his handwriting, and not one line was about me. *Her heartbeat's stronger this year,* one entry said. *I stood outside the cardiologist's office and I could have sworn I heard it through the wall.* Under the journal was a manila folder, sealed, and inside that, records with my name typed next to words like DONOR MATCH and RECIPIENT LOCATED. A private investigator's invoice. A text thread with a barista at the West Village bookshop: *she just walked in, get here now, raining hard.*

The rain. The umbrella. The stranger who found me like fate.

He hadn't found me. He'd tracked me.

I read every page standing there in my socks, and when I was done, I put it all back exactly as I'd found it — folder square, journal centered, safe door left open just a crack, the way it always was. Then I took my ring and closed the study door behind me without a sound.

---

The next morning I met Dr. Averie Wilson on the hospital roof, the only place she let me smoke my one cigarette a month. Wind cut through my coat. Midtown steamed below us like it didn't know anything had changed.

"Talk to me about the biopsy results," she said, tablet in hand, already bracing.

"Can you take a heart out. Whole. Keep it alive outside the body. Send it somewhere." I said it flat, like I was asking about shipping a package.

Her pen stopped. "Brynn."

"Can you."

"That's not — no. Absolutely not. You are in chronic rejection, do you understand that? Eighteen months if you're lucky, less if you skip a single re-transplant screening, and you're asking me about *logistics*—"

"He never loved me." I said it the way you'd report weather. "He loved what's in my chest. Five years, Averie. I found the file."

Her face did something complicated. Then she set the tablet down.

"I want it done at nine A.M.," I said. "The morning of the wedding."

"You're asking me to help you die on your wedding day."

"I'm asking you to help me stop being a vault."

She fought me with numbers, with ethics boards, with her own trembling hands gripping the roof railing. I let her. And when she finally said, voice cracking down the middle, *okay,* I didn't feel triumphant. I felt like a door closing softly somewhere very far away.

---

Two days before the wedding, a jet landed at Teterboro, and a dead woman walked off it.

Skye Guzman. Tanned, radiant, laughing into a phone before she'd even cleared customs. Callen's hands shook when he saw her come through the penthouse doors. He held her like something he'd prayed over for years finally answered back.

"An old friend," he told me, not looking at me. "She beat it. The illness. She's *alive*, Brynn."

I watched his eyes fill with the exact light I'd spent five years believing was mine.

I didn't scream. I packed one suitcase — my clothes, the ring, my parents' photograph — and left every diamond he'd ever hung on me hanging in the closet like shed skin. Biscuit yowled at the door when I left. I couldn't take her. I told myself I'd come back for her.

Within two days Skye had the housekeeper haul out my reclaimed-oak table, the anniversary photo, my whole toolkit of bone folders and bookbinding awls, straight to the curb. Callen found out and lost his mind completely — screaming at staff, firing the building manager, driving himself to a landfill transfer station in the Meatpacking District to dig a cracked frame out of the trash with his bare hands.

"He's not this unhinged over furniture," Yosef Green said quietly from the passenger seat, watching him claw through garbage bags. He didn't finish the thought. He didn't have to.

---

Callen texted: *we need to talk.* I went to Sag Harbor instead, to Piper Ashcroft's party, because some idiot hope in me still thought that meant something.

Truth or Dare. Piper's smile was all teeth. "Guess how many of us bet you wouldn't last a year," she said, and the table laughed and raised glasses to Skye's name like a toast to a saint, and somebody called me *the placeholder,* and I watched Callen laugh too — not cruel, just easy, like the joke was simply, obviously true.

I put my glass down. I picked up my bag.

I took the last train back to Penn Station alone, forehead against the cold window, watching the Hamptons dissolve into dark. Of everything that happened after, that ride is the one I'd replay the most — not because it hurt the most, but because it was the last time I let myself hope he'd come after me.
