After I Donated Blood to His Mistress, I Left Chapter 1

I stood in the corner of our Manhattan penthouse, a ghost at my own celebration. The champagne tower sparkled under the crystal chandelier, but I couldn't taste the sweetness of our billion-dollar IPO success. Not when every eye in the room was fixed on Jocelyn Evans, draped in white silk like a bride, her arm looped possessively through Logan's as she accepted congratulations for a company I'd bled to build.

Three years of takeout containers and sleepless nights. Three years of coding in our tiny Brooklyn apartment, of Logan and me dreaming against the odds. Now, in our glass-walled penthouse overlooking the city, I was invisible.

"To Carter Technologies and its brilliant leadership," announced the CFO, raising his glass toward Logan. The room erupted in applause.

I stepped forward, glass in hand, ready to join the toast. "And to—" I began, but Logan's gaze swept past me as if I were merely a shadow. His hand found Jocelyn's waist, pulling her closer.

"To Jocelyn, whose vision helped shape our future," he declared, his voice carrying across the room. More applause. More smiles directed at her.

I retreated, my champagne untouched, the bubbles dying in the glass like my hope.

Jocelyn's eyes met mine across the room, a flicker of triumph in them before she turned back to the executives fawning over her. She moved toward the refreshment table, her white dress flowing behind her like a victory flag.

As I approached to get some water, Jocelyn's hand suddenly swept across the table, knocking a crystal wine glass to the floor. It shattered against the white marble, the sound cutting through the celebratory chatter.

"She pushed me!" Jocelyn shrieked, her voice pitched to carry. "Olivia shoved me!"

All eyes turned to us. Logan was at her side instantly, his face darkening as he looked between us.

"I didn't—" I began, but Logan's cold gaze silenced me.

"Apologize," he ordered, his voice low and dangerous. "Now."

"Logan, I didn't touch her. The glass—"

"Apologize properly," he repeated, louder this time. The room fell silent. "Take off your shoes and walk over there. Kneel and apologize to Jocelyn for your behavior."

The executives watched, uncomfortable but silent. No one intervened. No one defended me.

I stared at the glittering shards spread across the marble floor, then at Jocelyn's smug expression. With trembling fingers, I slipped off my heels.

The first step sent a shard slicing into my sole. I bit my lip to keep from crying out. Each step was agony, glass embedding deeper as I made my way toward Jocelyn. Blood spotted the white marble, a crimson trail marking my path.

I knelt before her, glass cutting into my knees through my thin dress. "I'm sorry," I whispered, the words tasting like ash.

Jocelyn smiled down at me, her voice honey-sweet. "I forgive you, Olivia. We all make mistakes when we're... unstable."

Logan nodded, satisfied, then turned back to the party as if nothing had happened. The music resumed. The celebration continued.

Later that night, I locked myself in the bathroom, tears streaming down my face as I bandaged my lacerated feet. The cuts were deep, some requiring butterfly bandages. Blood had soaked through my dress, ruined another expensive piece I'd bought to impress at this very party.

When I could breathe again, I limped to my bedside drawer and pulled it open. Inside sat a mason jar, three-quarters full of glass pebbles—each one representing a disappointment, a betrayal, a moment I'd almost given up on Logan. My father's bet with me, made years ago when I'd left Seattle to follow Logan's dream.

I reached into the small velvet pouch beside the jar and withdrew another pebble. The glass caught the dim light as I held it between my fingers, remembering the crystal shards, the blood on the marble, the public humiliation.

With a steady hand, I dropped it into the jar. The clink echoed in the silent apartment.

Three more pebbles to go.

Days later, my phone exploded with notifications. An AI-generated deepfake video of me in explicit scenarios was trending nationally on Twitter. My face, my voice, but actions I'd never taken.

I traced the IP, gathered evidence of the forgery, and presented it to Logan in his office.

He barely glanced at my phone. "Maybe if you weren't so desperate for attention, people wouldn't believe it," he said dismissively. "Stop overreacting. It's just the internet."

"It's destroying my reputation," I protested. "The company should issue a statement—"

"Enough," he cut me off. "I won't waste company resources on your personal drama. Handle it yourself."

That night, as the whispers spread through the office and old friends texted in shock, I added another pebble to the jar, watching it settle among its brothers. The glass reflected my hollow eyes back at me, a countdown to an end I was beginning to welcome.
