After His Mistress Poisoned My Wolf and Took My Crown Chapter 1

The bond broke at 8:14 PM on the night of the Winter Solstice.

I stood at the cold rim of the ceremonial hall, fingers of my right hand numb and stiff against my hip, feeling the faint, stubborn pulse of the tether in my chest. Three years of silence, and I still looked for him.

Alpha Ledger took the dais. He didn't look at me until the entire Ironveil Pack settled into their quiet ranks. Then his cold gray eyes locked onto mine. There was no hesitation in his stance.

"I, Ledger, Alpha of Ironveil," his voice rang off the high stone rafters, flat and final, "reject you, Scarlet, as my mate."

The mark on the right side of my neck went instantly ice-cold, then completely hollow—like an iron door slamming shut in an empty room. Inside me, my starving wolf didn't whine; she tore at my ribs with a silent, ferocious snarl of raw fury before the shock dragged her down. My legs buckled under the sudden weight of the severance.

The stone floor hit my knees hard. Around me, hundreds of wolves watched in dead, motionless silence. Not a single person moved.

Ledger didn't spare me a second glance. In the very next breath, he reached for Renata Bell, the she-wolf he had crowned with my stolen privileges. Ledger pulled her against his chest and sank his fangs deep into her neck. Renata tilted her head back, meeting my blurred gaze over his broad shoulder. Her lips curved into a slow, blood-bright smile, victorious and dripping crimson.

Then my vision gave out.

When I woke, the smell of burnt wolfsbane and dried herbs stung my throat. I was on a cot in the pack healer's back room. Outside the heavy wooden door, raised voices broke the quiet.

"Step aside, Luna," an older, raspy voice grated. "Pack law dictates medical aid."

"She is an Omega without a bond," Renata's sharp voice answered, cold as glass. "Let the cold take her."

The door slammed back against the wall. The pack healer pushed inside, chest heaving, his jaw set in a hard line as he shoved the bolt into place against Renata's furious hiss.

He didn't waste breath on comfort. He knelt by my cot, peeled back my sleeve, and pressed two fingers hard against my forearm.

"The bond severance almost stopped your heart," he said bluntly, his voice low and clinical. "But it only broke you because your blood is saturated with silver dust. Someone has been salting your food for months."

I looked down. My right hand was pale, the knuckles swollen and gray.

"Try to shift the paw," he commanded quietly. "

Show me."

I gritted my teeth. On my left side, sharp, dark claws slid effortlessly from my knuckles. But my right hand only seized. The nerves fired like rusted wire, fingers trembling, twisting into malformed, blunted spurs that failed to form a true claw.

"Permanent nerve destruction," the healer stated without softening the blow. "The silver ate through the flexor tendons. You will never fully shift that hand again."

I stared at the crooked, useless fingers. Three years of enduring Ledger’s cold eyes, of cleaning the pack floors, of choking down whatever was left on the platters. This was what his reign had carved into my bones.

I closed my left fist tight. "Can I walk?"

The healer paused, studying my face, then dipped his chin. "Yes."

"Then I’m leaving."

I didn't pack clothes. I didn't take food. I stood up on trembling legs and waited until the healer scribbled on a parchment slip—a clinical confirmation of deliberate silver poisoning and the resulting nerve necrosis, stamped with his personal crest. I took the folded paper, tucked it securely beneath the inner lining of my jacket against my ribs, and walked toward the clinic's back latch.

Before dawn broke over the Ironveil valley, I slipped past the outer patrol lines. The stone hall was still illuminated behind me, glowing with the golden warmth of Ledger's and Renata's mating feast. I didn't turn around. I didn't leave a note.

The frost was brutal. With every step north into unclaimed territory, the snow rose past my shins. My right arm hung heavy at my side, my deadened fingers incapable of gripping the hemlock boughs I brushed past to keep my footing. The bitter mountain air burned my lungs, washing away the stench of Ledger's pine-and-iron cedar until the pack boundary ceased to exist under my boots.

I kept walking until the scent of Ironveil vanished completely.

Miles beyond the border, where the land turned jagged and forsaken, I found an abandoned hunter's cabin perched on a ridge. The timber door hung crooked on leather hinges. I pushed inside, the wood groaning against the gale, and dropped onto the frozen floorboards.

The silver in my veins still throbbed like molten lead. My body was hollowed out, cold, and stripped down to bare survival.

Then, deep in the dark recesses of my bruised chest, an ancient current surged.

My wolf, silent and buried beneath years of suppression, gave a slow, jagged stir. Her consciousness brushed against mine—not with a whimper of an abused Omega, but with a sudden, vibrating resonance that made the floorboards beneath my palms vibrate.

*Alive,* she whispered into my mind.

Outside, the first heavy flakes of a blizzard began hitting the shuttered windowpane, masking the distant, heavy crunch of heavy snow boots tracking directly toward my door.
