After His Mistress Killed Our Unborn Pup Chapter 1

The bond broke at 9:47 on a Wednesday night, but it started dying long before that.

I felt it the moment Mallory screamed.

She came through the crowd in a white dress, carrying a ladle of hot cider like she was serving the gods themselves, and then—so smoothly, so perfectly—her wrist turned and the scalding liquid splashed across her own forearm. The shriek she let out split the cold air like a blade.

"She bumped me!" Mallory gasped, clutching her arm, her eyes wide and glassy with tears that came too fast, too ready. "Emberly bumped me—I couldn't—"

I hadn't moved. I was standing three feet away, still as stone in my silver ceremonial furs, watching her perform.

I had seen this before. The trembling lip. The perfectly timed injury. The way her gaze cut sideways to Ledger before the first tear even fell.

I had always known. I just never had proof.

"Emberly."

Ledger's voice hit me before I turned to face him. That voice—the one that used to feel like a hand around mine—had become something else entirely over three years. An instrument. A weapon he kept polished and ready.

He was already using the Alpha tone when he spoke my name. I felt it press down on my shoulders like a physical weight, forcing my chin up, forcing my eyes to his.

"You will go into the lake," he said, loud enough for every wolf at the Solstice Gathering to hear. Two hundred faces turned toward me. "You will wade in until the ice claims your pride. And you will stay until I say otherwise."

Inside me, my wolf surged.

Not in fear. Not in submission.

In rage.

One violent, white-hot pulse of fury that shook through my chest like a thunderclap—and then she went silent. Completely, utterly silent. Like a candle snuffed between two fingers.

I had never felt her go quiet like that before. Not in three years. Not ever.

I looked at Ledger for one long moment. His jaw was set. He wasn't questioning Mallory. He wasn't looking at me the way a mate looks at a mate. He was looking at me the way an Alpha looks at a problem he needs solved.

I unlaced my silver furs.

The cold hit me first through my feet—the frozen ground, then the shallow ice at the lake's edge. I walked in without hesitating. The water swallowed my ankles, my knees, my waist. It was so cold it didn't feel like cold anymore. It felt like nothing. Like the absence of everything.

I counted.

One. Two. Three.

It was the only thing I knew how to do when the world became unbearable. Count. Keep track. Make sure someone was marking the seconds, even if that someone was only me.

Four. Five.

When I surfaced, I couldn't feel my hands. My lips were numb. I looked down at my forearm and saw the frost had already left its mark—pale, ice-whorled patterns spiraling up toward my elbow like something had reached up from the water and claimed me.

I heard the murmur move through the crowd before I understood what they were looking at.

My neck.

The mate mark—Ledger's mark, the one I had worn for three years like a promise—flickered. I felt it happen. A dimming, like a lamp running out of oil. I pressed my fingers to it and felt the warmth draining out of it in real time.

From the elders' bench, Elder Antonio Knight rose halfway from his seat. Ledger's grandfather. The man who had arranged our mating. He gripped his cane so hard his knuckles had gone white, and something behind his eyes shattered quietly, like glass breaking inside a closed room.

He sat back down. He didn't stop it.

I climbed out of the lake without help.

I walked past Ledger without meeting his eyes.

---

I was still dripping when I reached his office.

The Luna renunciation document had been sitting in my drawer for six months. I had drafted it in the dark, alone, three weeks after the night I lost the baby. I never thought I would use it. I kept thinking things would change.

I set it on his desk. Unsigned.

Then I opened the mind-link for the last time.

His presence was still there—faint, fraying, the way a rope looks right before it snaps. I felt him feel me reach for him. I felt his surprise.

*I would rather lose every memory I have,* I said through the link, *than keep a single one of you.*

I cut it before he could answer.

Clean. Deliberate. Final.

And immediately—immediately—something shifted. His scent, which had lived in the back of my mind for three years like a permanent bruise, began to thin. Not gone. Not yet. But fading at the edges, like ink left in rain.

I sat down on the hallway floor, still wet, and waited for myself to fall apart.

I didn't.

---

Forty-eight hours later, Ledger summoned Beta Caden Holt and the Gamma to witness.

Mallory stood just outside the doorway. I could see her in my peripheral vision, her lips barely moving, whispering something to him right before he opened his mouth.

His voice was flat. Formal. Absolute.

"I, Ledger, Alpha of Nighthollow, reject you, Emberly Crawford, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went cold.

Then hollow.

Like a door closing in an empty room.

I picked up the pen and signed the renunciation without a tremor in my hand. Caden watched me do it. His face was unreadable, but his eyes—his eyes stayed on mine a beat too long, like he was looking for something he was afraid he wouldn't find.

As Ledger spoke the last word, I saw it: a shudder moving through him. Just one. Fast, almost invisible. His wolf, flinching from something it didn't yet understand.

I stood up, set the pen down, and walked out.

In the hallway, Mallory smiled at me.

I looked at her face—really looked—and felt nothing at all.

That was when I knew something had already begun.
