After His Mistress Framed Me, My Parents Died Chapter 1

I pressed my right palm flat against my thigh. One. Two. Three.

The tremor didn't stop. It never did. But the pressure helped. A trick I'd learned in the first month here, when I realized my hands would never be what they were.

I picked up the scalpel.

"Dr. Turner?" Soren Malik hovered at my elbow, eyes wide. He was twenty-six, fresh out of Damascus, and still young enough to think surgery was about brilliance instead of endurance.

"Shrapnel," I said. "Left lower quadrant. We go in, we extract, we close. You'll do the initial incision."

His hands were steady. Mine weren't. But I'd learned to work around that.

The patient was a twelve-year-old girl who'd been in the wrong place when a car bomb went off three blocks from her school. She was asleep under anesthesia now, her face slack and peaceful. I liked that part. The part where they didn't know yet how much it was going to hurt later.

"Scalpel," Soren said. His voice only shook a little.

I watched his hands. Corrected his angle. Guided him through the bleeders. The shrapnel came out in three pieces—twisted metal that had no business being inside a child. We irrigated, closed, and I let him do the final sutures while I charted.

When we stepped out of the OR, the morning light was sharp and white. Dust hung in the air. Somewhere in the distance, I heard the low rumble of a truck convoy.

"She'll be okay?" Soren asked.

"If she doesn't get an infection," I said. "Keep an eye on her for the next forty-eight hours."

He nodded and disappeared down the hall. I rolled my shoulders and felt the tightness in my neck. Another surgery. Another life pulled back from the edge. It was enough. It had to be.

I was halfway to the staff room when Rami Haddad intercepted me.

"Melany." He looked tired. Rami always looked tired. Running a field hospital in a conflict zone did that. "We have an incoming transport. Private medical charter."

I stopped. "Okay."

"American businessman. He's demanding the best surgeon we have for his companion. She's unconscious. Possible internal injuries from a car accident." Rami's mouth thinned. "He's offering to donate supplies if we prioritize her care."

I'd treated entitled foreigners before. People who thought money could buy them a different kind of suffering. "I'll take a look when she gets here."

"They're landing in twenty minutes."

I nodded and kept walking. Behind me, I heard Dakota's voice—low, sharp. "American?"

I didn't turn around.

Twenty minutes later, I was in the triage bay when the transport doors opened.

A man stepped out first. Tall. Dark suit, dusty at the knees. He was carrying a woman in his arms, and his face was tight with something I couldn't name yet.

Then he looked up.

Ezra Kennedy.

My hands stopped shaking. Not because they were steady. Because every part of me had gone completely still.

He saw me. I watched the recognition hit him—watched his face go white, watched his mouth open like he was going to say something.

I turned to the nurse beside me. "Get her on the table. Check vitals. I need a full trauma panel and imaging."

My voice was calm. Professional. I didn't look at him again.

I walked out.

The corridor was cooler. Quieter. I kept walking until I reached the far wall, and then I stopped and pressed my palm flat against the concrete.

One. Two. Three.

Dakota appeared beside me. She didn't say anything. She just stood there, close enough that I could feel her presence, far enough that I could breathe.

Thirty seconds. That's all I gave myself.

Then I straightened, turned around, and walked back into the triage bay.

The woman on the table was Colette Morgan. I recognized her even unconscious. Pale skin. Delicate features. The kind of face that made people want to protect her.

I moved to the table and began my assessment. Broken ribs. Possible internal bleeding. Her vitals were stable but weak.

Ezra stood in the doorway. I could feel him watching me.

Soren was at my side, holding the chart. His eyes flicked between me and the man in the doorway. He didn't ask. He knew better.

"Prep her for imaging," I said. "I want to see what we're dealing with before we go in."

"Yes, Dr. Turner."

I didn't look at Ezra. Not once. I treated Colette Morgan the way I treated every patient who came through those doors—with precision, with care, with the full weight of everything I had left.

When I finally stepped back, my hands were shaking harder than they had all morning.

I worked two hours past the end of my shift. I reorganized the trauma supply inventory. I restocked the suture kits. I counted gauze pads until the numbers stopped meaning anything.

Dakota brought me coffee. Black. Too hot. She set it on the shelf and didn't say a word.

When I finally sat down, I opened my medical notebook. The photograph was there, in the front cover. My father's smile. My mother's hand on his shoulder.

I closed the notebook.

I didn't need to look at it. I already knew what I'd lost.
