After His Mistress Framed Me for Killing Her Baby Chapter 1

The bracelet was gone.

I stood in the bedroom doorway and stared at the empty velvet tray on my dresser. My mother's sapphire bracelet. The one she'd worn every day until the cancer took her. The one she'd pressed into my palm the night before she died, her fingers cold and thin around mine.

"Wear it when you need me," she'd whispered.

I wore it every day.

I tore through the room. Opened every drawer. Checked under the bed. My hands were shaking. The tray sat there, mocking me with its emptiness. I pressed my thumb against my bare left wrist. The skin felt wrong without the weight of it.

Downstairs, I found Estella in the kitchen. She was pouring coffee, elegant and unhurried in a cream silk blouse that probably cost more than most people's rent. Her dark hair fell in perfect waves. She looked up when I came in, and her smile was warm.

"Morning, Lilliana."

"Where's my bracelet?"

Her smile flickered. "I'm sorry?"

"My mother's bracelet. The sapphire one. It's gone."

She set down the coffee pot carefully. "Oh. Oh god." Her hand went to her mouth. "I donated some things yesterday. To that charity drive in the Bronx. I thought—" She looked stricken. "I thought those were just old pieces you didn't wear anymore. They were in a box in the guest room."

"I never put it in the guest room."

"You must have." Her voice was gentle. Reasonable. "Lilliana, I would never have taken it if I'd known. You have so much jewelry, I just assumed—"

"You assumed wrong."

Raiden's voice came from behind me. "What's going on?"

I turned. My husband stood in the hallway, still in his dress shirt from whatever meeting he'd had that morning. Raiden Payne. Six feet of controlled power and absolute certainty. The man I'd loved for years. The man who'd started looking at me differently ever since Estella Chapman walked into our lives six months ago with her soft voice and her sympathetic eyes and her convenient interest in helping him build his legacy.

"She donated my mother's bracelet," I said.

Estella's eyes filled with tears. Actual tears. "I made a mistake. I'm so sorry. I'll call the charity right now and—"

"Don't bother." I grabbed my purse. "I'll get it myself."

Raiden caught my arm. "Lilliana. She said she's sorry."

I looked at his hand on my arm. Then at his face. "Let go."

He did. But his jaw was tight. "It's a bracelet."

"It was my mother's."

"And Estella made a mistake." His voice had that edge now. The one that said the conversation was over because he'd decided it was over. "She's trying to help around the house. You're being unreasonable."

I left without answering.

The Bronx charity had already distributed everything. They gave me a list of thrift stores and pawn shops across lower Manhattan. Twenty-three locations. I started at the top.

It was July. The kind of heat that made the sidewalk shimmer. I walked from shop to shop, described the bracelet to bored clerks and suspicious owners. Most of them barely looked up. By noon, my head was pounding. By two, I was dizzy. By four, I was on my knees on a midtown sidewalk, throwing up into a gutter while strangers stepped around me.

Someone called an ambulance. I refused to get in. Just sat there with my back against a building, pressing my thumb against my wrist, until I could stand again.

I found it on the second day. A pawn shop on the Lower East Side, bars on the windows and a bell that jangled when I pushed through the door. The owner was a tired-looking man with ink-stained fingers. He pulled the bracelet from a case in the back.

"Two hundred," he said.

I paid him four.

When I got home, Raiden was in his study with Estella. I heard her voice through the door, soft and worried. "—just think she's been so stressed lately. Maybe she needs to talk to someone. A professional."

I walked in. Held up the bracelet.

Estella's face crumpled with relief. "Oh thank god. I've been so worried—"

"Don't," I said.

Raiden stood. "Lilliana. Estella's been trying to help you find it. She's been calling shops all day."

"How thoughtful."

He moved around the desk. His eyes were hard. "What is your problem?"

"My problem," I said slowly, "is that my mother's bracelet ended up in a Bronx thrift store, and I had to spend two days crawling through pawn shops to find it."

Estella touched his arm. "Raiden, maybe I should go."

"No." He didn't look at her. He looked at me. "You know what I think? I think you're so obsessed with the past that you can't see the future we're trying to build. This bracelet, your mother, all of it—it's holding you back."

"Holding me back from what?"

"From us. From what we're supposed to be doing. Building a legacy. A family."

Estella made a small sound. Almost a sob. "I just wanted to help."

Raiden's hand closed around the bracelet. I tried to pull back. His grip tightened.

"Let go," I said.

"You want to keep living in the past?" His voice was cold. "Fine. Let's end it."

He walked to his desk. Opened a drawer. Pulled out a hammer.

I couldn't breathe. "Raiden. Don't."

He set the bracelet on the desk. Raised the hammer.

"Please," I whispered.

The hammer came down.

The sapphire shattered. Blue shards scattered across the dark wood. The silver band crumpled.

I didn't cry. I just stood there, watching the pieces glitter under the desk lamp. Then I looked up at my husband.

A stranger looked back.

That night, Raiden had dinner downstairs with Estella. I heard their voices. Her laugh, light and musical. His, lower, answering.

I sat on the bedroom floor and pressed my thumb against my bare wrist. The skin was still wrong. Still empty.

I pulled out my phone. Sent an encrypted message to Nora Bassett in Boston.

*I need to move up the timeline. Two weeks. Can you be ready?*

Her reply came fast.

*Always. Thomas is safe. We're ready when you are.*

I deleted the message. Started a new list in my head. Bank accounts. Documents. Routes.

Two weeks.

I would take my son and disappear. And Raiden Payne would never find us.

I didn't know that Estella was already three steps ahead.
