After Discovering My Husband's Plan to Seize My Property Chapter 1

My husband, Chris Graham and I had just returned from a half-month business trip. As I approached our front door, I noticed a woman standing there, the faint scent of tea wafting from her. Her presence was an unexpected jolt to my senses.

"Chris, you're back?" she said with a familiarity that sent a chill down my spine.

It took me a moment to register that she was Hailey, the woman Chris had mentioned more than once, always with a certain fondness. The shock hit me hard, as if the ground beneath my feet had suddenly shifted.

"Godmother made all the dishes we used to love. Come in quickly," Hailey said, her tone as smooth as silk, pulling Chris inside with an ease that spoke of long-standing intimacy.

Inside, the house was filled with the mouthwatering aromas of home-cooked food, but the warmth I usually felt was replaced by a cold dread. My parents-in-law greeted us warmly, their faces lit up with joy. It was as if they were welcoming their own daughter home. But this was my home!

——

Chris looked at Hailey with a tenderness that was once reserved for me. Only after a few moments did he seem to remember my presence.

"Yasmine, come in quickly. What are you doing standing at the door?" he called out.

Hailey seized the moment, her expression turning triumphant as she looked down at me. "Why don't you come in? It's so hot outside. Do you want the mosquitoes to come in and bite me?"

My mother-in-law, Susan, stood by, arms crossed, her face a mask of dissatisfaction. The weight of my luggage felt unbearable, so I dropped it and marched upstairs, my heart pounding with anger and hurt. The house that once felt like a sanctuary now seemed alien, filled with strangers who had taken my place.

"What's gotten into you?" Susan's voice followed me, sharp and accusing. Chris, finally sensing my distress, hurried after me. He grabbed my arm, his touch both familiar and foreign.

"Yasmine, listen to me. Hailey is just staying for a while," he said, his voice pleading.

I whirled around to face him, my eyes blazing. "So you knew she was here all along?"

Chris's hand trembled as he held mine, guilt etched into his features. "I, I just found out too," he stammered, but his eyes betrayed him.

Susan approached, her face set in an annoyed expression, with Hailey trailing behind, looking almost innocent. "Hailey just came back from abroad. She has nowhere else to go. How could I, as her godmother, let her live on the streets?" She stroked Hailey's hand affectionately, asserting her authority in my home. The gesture was possessive, claiming Hailey as one of their own and leaving me on the outside.

It was clear now: in this house, I was no longer the lady of the manor. I was a guest, a stranger in my own home, surrounded by a family that had already replaced me. The realization hit me hard and a cold resolve settled in my heart. This was a battle I hadn't seen coming, but one I was determined to fight.

The fact was, this entire villa was my pre-marital property. I had inherited it from my parents, a symbol of their hard work and love. It was my sanctuary, a place filled with my dreams and memories. But I couldn't stand Chris's incessant pleas, so I agreed to let his parents move in, thinking it might bring us closer as a family.

As I stood in the foyer, the tension was palpable. My father-in-law, Harris emerged from the kitchen, wiping his hands on a dish towel, concern etched on his face.

"Don't worry, Yasmine," he said, trying to sound reassuring. "Although Hailey had a relationship with Chris, things have changed. Now we all treat her as a daughter. Don't worry, she is very sensible."

I stared at him, my anger bubbling just beneath the surface. Sensible? Hailey, sensible? The woman who had thrown herself into Chris's arms the moment she saw him, calling him by his first name with a familiarity that made my skin crawl. Was this what they called sensible?

"I'm sorry, Yasmine, although the villa is very big, I'm not used to those cold guest rooms," Hailey said, her voice dripping with false innocence. She looked at me with a triumphant gleam in her eyes, continuing, "So I lived in your bedroom."

My heart stopped for a moment. Our bedroom. Our wedding room. The sacred space where Chris and I had shared our first night as husband and wife. The room filled with cherished memories and promises.

"Looking at Chris's photos, I feel like he is by my side," Hailey added, her smile widening. "You won't blame me, will you, sister?"

She knew exactly how to push my buttons, how to get under my skin. Her words were a calculated attack, designed to inflict maximum damage. I felt a burning desire to tear down the bedroom and rebuild it, to erase her presence from my life completely.

Susan chimed in, her voice filled with disdain. "After getting married, this is my son's house. Why should she blame you?" She stood with her hands on her hips, glaring at me with a look that said I was the intruder here.

"Really?" Hailey asked, pretending to be shocked, covering her mouth in mock surprise. "But I see that my sister looks unhappy. Does she dislike me?" She blinked at me innocently, but her eyes sparkled with malice.

I could hardly believe the audacity of her words. The room felt suffocating, filled with people who were supposed to be my family but were acting like strangers. I felt cornered, betrayed and overwhelmingly angry. But I also felt a cold, steely resolve harden within me. This was my home, my life and I would not let them take it from me without a fight.

The luggage in my hand grew heavier and heavier, a physical manifestation of the emotional weight I was carrying. Harris continued to smile at me, oblivious to the storm brewing inside.

"I was really angry and laughed," I thought, the absurdity of the situation striking me.

Hailey had thrown herself into Chris's arms as soon as they met, calling him Chris with that sweet, sickening tone. Was this what they called sensible? And now, she had the gall to live in our bedroom, claiming it felt like Chris was by her side. The nerve of her, acting as if she had any right to our private sanctuary.

Susan's presence loomed over me, her hands on her hips, looking at me with that disdainful gaze. "After getting married, this is my son's house. Why should she blame you?" she said, her tone making it clear that in her eyes, I was the one at fault.

"Really?" Hailey asked, her voice dripping with feigned innocence. "But I see that my sister Yasmine looks unhappy. Does she dislike me?" She blinked at me, her eyes sparkling with malicious delight.

The audacity of her words made my blood boil. The room felt suffocating, filled with people who were supposed to be my family but were acting like strangers. I felt cornered, betrayed and overwhelmingly angry. But I also felt a cold, steely resolve harden within me. This was my home, my life and I would not let them take it from me without a fight.

"It's okay, she won't be angry," Harris insisted, his eyes pleading with me to keep the peace.

He and Susan were clearly aligned in their efforts to placate their beloved goddaughter while simultaneously trying to silence me. They hoped to settle the situation and then step in as peacemakers, gaining a reputation for being fair and reasonable. It was a clever maneuver, effectively killing three birds with one stone.

"Yasmine, let's eat first," Chris asked, his voice awkward and strained. He glanced between me and his parents, clearly uncomfortable with the tension in the room.

I didn't answer. I stood on the stairs, my grip tightening on the railing as I quietly observed the scene before me. Chris, his parents and Hailey looked like a close-knit family, while I felt like an outsider in my own home. The resentment bubbled up inside me, but I refused to give them the satisfaction of an outburst.

"Yasmine won't be really angry, right?" Hailey asked, her tone a mix of innocence and provocation. She looked at me with those calculating eyes, fully aware of the chaos she was stirring.

I took a deep breath, holding her gaze for a long moment. The silence was thick with unspoken tension. Finally, I allowed a sneer to curl my lips. "Just eat, okay," I replied, my voice dripping with cold amusement.

I forced a smile as I descended the stairs, determined to keep my composure. Every step felt like a deliberate act of defiance. I was resolved to maintain control, no matter what tricks Hailey had up her sleeve. If they thought they could undermine me in my own home, they were sorely mistaken. I was ready for whatever games this so-called sensible woman planned to play.
