Academic misconduct Chapter 1

Dr. Elias Voss did not tolerate disruption.

In the high-ceilinged seminar room on the third floor of the humanities building, twenty-three postgraduate students sat in carefully arranged silence as he moved through the final points of the lecture. His voice remained even, precise, almost detached. He never raised it. He never needed to. The authority he carried was quiet and absolute, the kind that made people straighten in their seats without being told.

Ava Sinclair was the exception.

She sat near the middle of the room, dark hair pulled back, pen moving steadily across the page even when she was clearly listening more than writing. Three times during the seminar she had interrupted not with the hesitant questions most students offered, but with direct, carefully formed challenges to his interpretation of the text. Each time the air in the room had tightened. Each time Elias had answered her with clinical calm, dismantling her argument without ever appearing ruffled.

He was not ruffled.

He was aware of her in a way that had begun to unsettle him.

When the seminar ended, chairs scraped softly against the floor as students gathered their belongings. Most left quickly. A few lingered with minor questions. Elias answered them with the same measured courtesy he gave everyone, his gaze already moving toward the door. He wanted the room empty. He wanted the residual tension of the last ninety minutes to leave with them.

Ava did not leave.

She remained in her seat until the last student had gone, then stood and walked toward the front of the room with the same unhurried confidence she had shown throughout the seminar. Elias closed the folder on the lectern and waited. He did not invite her to speak. He simply watched her approach.

“You disagreed with my reading of the final passage,” he said.

It was not a question.

“I did.” Her voice was steady. “I still do. You treated the narrator’s silence as deliberate cruelty. I think it was fear.”

Elias studied her for a moment longer than necessary. Most students who challenged him eventually looked away. Ava Sinclair did not. There was no arrogance in her posture, only a quiet refusal to retreat.

“Fear and cruelty are not mutually exclusive,” he replied. “You would do well to remember that when you write your final paper.”

Something flickered across her expression irritation, perhaps, or reluctant acknowledgment. She nodded once.

“I’ll take it under consideration, Dr. Voss.”

She turned to leave. Elias should have allowed her to go. The rational part of his mind, the part that had governed every professional interaction for years, told him to end the exchange cleanly. Instead, he heard himself speak again.

“Ms. Sinclair.”

She stopped at the door and looked back.

“My office hours are listed on the department portal. If you intend to continue challenging the material at this level, you will do so properly. Bring a developed argument. Not fragments.”

For the first time that afternoon, the corner of her mouth moved not quite a smile, but close enough to register.

“I’ll do that,” she said.

Then she was gone.

Elias remained standing at the lectern after the door closed. The seminar room felt larger without her in it, and quieter in a way that was not entirely comfortable. He gathered his papers with deliberate care, aligning the edges before placing them inside his leather folder. Routine had always steadied him. Today it felt insufficient.

He left the building through the side entrance and crossed the quad under a pale autumn sky. Colleagues nodded as he passed. He returned the gestures without slowing. In the department wing, the administrative assistant glanced up from her desk and informed him that Dr. Crowe had asked to speak with him when he had a moment. Elias acknowledged the message and continued to his office without stopping.

The office was exactly as he preferred it: ordered, sparsely furnished, the desk clear except for a single stack of essays and a fountain pen he had used for fifteen years. He set the folder down, removed his jacket, and sat. For a long time he did not move.

Ava Sinclair’s voice remained in his mind with unnatural clarity.

He had noticed her before today, of course. She was difficult not to notice. Her contributions in previous seminars had been consistently sharp. She never spoke simply to fill silence. She spoke when she had something to say, and she did not soften her points for the sake of politeness. In another student he might have found the quality merely promising. In her, it registered differently—more persistent, more disruptive to the careful distance he maintained with everyone else.

Elias exhaled slowly and reached for the nearest essay, determined to return to work. The words on the page refused to hold his attention. After several minutes he set the paper aside and turned toward the window. The quad below was beginning to empty as the afternoon lectures ended. He watched the dark-haired figure of Ava Sinclair crossing the stone path toward the library, bag over one shoulder, posture straight.

She did not look back.

He remained at the window until she disappeared from view.

Only then did he return to his desk. The stack of essays waited. The email inbox contained three messages that required responses. The ordinary demands of the day were still there, unchanged. Yet something beneath them had shifted by a fraction, like a picture frame knocked the smallest degree off center.

Elias opened the department portal and scrolled to the list of scheduled office hours. His own were clearly marked—Thursday afternoons, two until four, by appointment. He stared at the screen longer than necessary. The rational course was simple. If she came, he would keep the discussion strictly academic, timed, and impersonal. He would restore the boundary that should never have felt threatened in the first place.

He closed the browser.

He would not think about whether she would come.

He would not allow the possibility to occupy space in his mind.

And yet, as the light in the office began to fade and the building settled into its late-afternoon quiet, one clear and unwelcome thought remained:

If Ava Sinclair walked into his office, he was no longer certain he would be able to send her away as cleanly as he should.

The thought stayed with him long after he turned off the lamp and left the building, following him into the evening like a door that had been left slightly open.
