A Marriage contract with the Ruthless Billionaire Chapter 1

“You can have the bed to yourself tonight.”

Damian’s voice broke the silence.

Valerie blinked.

Only moments ago, his hands had been on her as though she were the only woman in the world.

Now he sounded as though she were nothing more than another obligation.

He stepped away from the bed without another glance.

He rose from the tangled silk sheets with the effortless confidence of a man completely in control.

Moonlight spilled through the floor-to-ceiling windows, tracing the sharp lines of his broad shoulders and sculpted frame. His dark hair remained slightly tousled, the only evidence that anything intimate had happened between them.

Then he turned.

His grey eyes were empty.

Valerie almost believed she’d imagined the intensity she’d seen in them only minutes before.

Without a word, he pulled a black sweater over his head and stepped into his trousers. Every movement was calm, precise, almost routine—as though leaving her bed required no more thought than fastening the luxury watch around his wrist.

“And Valerie?”

His hand rested on the doorknob.

“Remember the terms.” His voice was smooth, almost indifferent. “This is a contract. No strings attached.”

The door clicked shut.

Silence settled over the room.

Valerie stared at it.

One second.

Two.

Three.

Ridiculous.

Why was she staring at a door?

She looked away with a quiet exhale, annoyed with herself before she even understood why.

It’s just a contract.

She’d known the rules before she’d signed her name.

Protection.

Security.

Nothing more.

So why did he always manage to make those words sound colder after moments like this?

Wrapping the monogrammed sheet around herself, she climbed out of bed and walked toward the marble bathroom. The estate was as silent as ever, its emptiness swallowing every sound she made.

She turned on the shower.

As steam slowly filled the room, another memory rose with it.

The day everything changed.

Three Months Earlier

“Please… I just need a few days! My father only died yesterday!”

Valerie’s plea cracked as her back slammed against the cold brick wall behind the downtown bar where she worked. Pain shot through her shoulders, but it barely registered.

The smell of cheap whiskey clung to the alley, mixing with stale cigarette smoke and rain-soaked concrete. Less than twenty-four hours ago, she’d buried her father. She hadn’t even figured out how to mourn him yet.

Now she was fighting for the chance to survive him.

Her father’s drinking had taken everything in the end—his health, his dignity, and apparently, even his death wasn’t enough to settle the debts he’d left behind.

The men surrounding her believed in only one thing.

Payment.

“We already took your little car, sweetheart.” The leader smirked, tightening his grip on her arm. “Didn’t even make a dent. Your father left us with a debt big enough to bury ten men.”

Valerie stared at him, her mind refusing to catch up with his words.

“That debt isn’t mine.”

“It became yours the moment he died.”

Her lips parted, but nothing came out.

She had barely managed to pay for a funeral.

How was she supposed to pay for this?

“I… I don’t have that kind of money.”

The man’s smile widened.

“Well…” His gaze roamed over her slowly, making her stomach twist. “Money isn’t the only way to settle a debt.”

His grimy finger brushed her jaw.

Valerie flinched.

“You’re a beautiful girl.” He chuckled. “Stay with us for a while, and maybe we’ll call it even.”

The laughter that followed made her blood run cold.

For one terrifying second, fear rooted her to the spot.

Then instinct took over.

She drove her heel into the leader’s shin.

He howled.

Before the others could react, she shoved the nearest man into a pile of metal crates.

The crash echoed through the alley.

Valerie ran.

She didn’t look back.

She couldn’t.

All she knew was that if they caught her, everything would be over.

She ran until every breath burned.

Rain lashed against her face as she darted through unfamiliar streets, the pounding footsteps behind her refusing to disappear.

Please…

She didn’t even know who she was pleading with anymore.

The towering silhouette of a luxury hotel came into view. Without thinking, she slipped through the back entrance and hurried down a quiet corridor.

She needed somewhere to hide.

A door stood slightly ajar.

She pushed it open, stepped inside, and eased it shut behind her.

Silence.

Her chest rose and fell with each ragged breath as she pressed herself against the door, straining to listen.

Nothing.

No footsteps.

No voices.

Relief loosened the knot in her chest.

She’d lost them.

Slowly, she turned around.

Her breath caught.

A man sat in a leather armchair near the floor-to-ceiling windows, as though he’d been there all along. One leg rested over the other, his hands relaxed on the armrests. He didn’t seem surprised by her sudden entrance.

He simply watched her.

Grey eyes.

Unreadable.

For one unsettling moment, Valerie forgot all about the men chasing her.

She hadn’t escaped one predator.

She had walked straight into another.

He rose to his feet.

Not in alarm.

Not in curiosity.

Simply because he chose to.

He was tall enough that Valerie instinctively took half a step back. His tailored charcoal suit fit him with effortless precision, every detail about him polished without trying. There was nothing flashy about him.

His eyes rested on her for a long moment.

Not wandering.

Assessing.

She had the strange feeling he wasn’t merely looking at her—he was reading her.

Rainwater dripped from the hem of her dress onto the polished floor.

Neither of them spoke.

The silence stretched.

Then…

“You’re running from someone.”

It wasn’t a question.

Valerie’s eyes widened.

“How did you know?”

“You came in soaked, out of breath, and locked the door behind you.” His gaze remained steady. “People don’t do that unless they’re afraid.”

Before Valerie could respond, angry voices echoed from the corridor.

“Search this floor!”

Her face drained of color.

She instinctively looked toward the door.

Damian followed her gaze.

“They’re closer than I thought.”

His attention returned to her.

“They won’t stop until they find you.”

The room suddenly felt smaller.

“What… what do you want?” she asked.

For the first time, something almost resembling interest flickered in his eyes.

Then he said the words that would change her life forever.

“Marry me.”

Silence.

Valerie simply stared at him.

She wondered if she’d heard him correctly.

“I beg your pardon?”

“Three years,” he said with the same unsettling calm. “You will be my wife. You will bear me a child. In return, your father’s debt disappears, and no one will ever touch you again.”

The angry voices outside grew louder.

“She should be on this floor!”

“Check every room!”

Valerie’s pulse hammered against her ribs.

She looked from the door… back to the stranger standing before her.

Nothing about this made sense.

“Why me?” she whispered, unable to hide the confusion in her voice. “Out of everyone… why me?”

For the first time, he glanced at his watch.

“You have approximately thirty seconds before they reach this room.”

His voice remained maddeningly calm.

“You can spend them asking questions…”

His gaze met hers.

“…or making a decision.”

The hallway fell silent.

Footsteps.

Closer.

Steady.

Valerie’s fingers curled into trembling fists.

Damian didn’t move.

“Choose.”

One word.

No pressure.

Just a choice.

“Me…”

Another step echoed outside.

“…or them.”

Damian held her gaze for a long moment before reaching into the inner pocket of his suit and taking out his phone.

“Bring my legal team to the VIP lounge,” he said calmly. “I need a contract drafted immediately.”

He ended the call without waiting for a reply.

Valerie stared at him, struggling to comprehend how a man could discuss something as life-altering as marriage with the same composure one might use to schedule a business meeting.

The room fell silent once more. Outside, the distant voices of the loan sharks continued to echo through the corridor, a constant reminder that time was slipping away.

Barely ten minutes later, the door opened, and two lawyers entered carrying a leather briefcase. They greeted Damian with respectful nods before arranging several documents neatly across the coffee table. Their movements were efficient and practiced, suggesting they had done this countless times before.

Valerie lowered her eyes to the papers. Every clause was carefully worded, leaving no room for misunderstanding. It outlined a three-year marriage, the obligation to bear one child, and the protection Damian had promised in return. It wasn’t a proposal—it was a business agreement disguised as a marriage.

She reached for the pen almost instinctively, but before the tip could touch the paper, her hand froze.

One signature would erase the life she’d known and bind her to a man she had met only minutes ago.

Slowly, she placed the pen back on the table and looked up.

“I have a condition,” she said quietly.

The room fell silent.

One of the lawyers looked up from the documents, clearly caught off guard. Another adjusted his glasses, as though he wasn’t entirely sure he’d heard her correctly.

Damian, who had been standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows with one hand in his pocket, slowly turned to face her. His expression remained unreadable, but there was a subtle shift in his gaze—as though she had just done something he hadn’t anticipated.

“You are hardly in a position to negotiate,” he said calmly.

Valerie glanced at the contract before meeting his eyes again. Despite the fear twisting inside her, her voice remained steady.

“Maybe not.” She rested a finger lightly on the unsigned pages. “But until I sign it… this contract means nothing.”

For the first time since she’d walked into the room, neither of them spoke.

The lawyers looked from Valerie to Damian, waiting to see how a man who always seemed to have complete control would respond to someone refusing to play by his rules.

“I’ll honor every clause in this agreement,” Valerie said, refusing to lower her eyes. “I’ll be your wife for three years. I’ll fulfill every responsibility it asks of me. But I refuse to live as though I don’t exist.”

The room became impossibly still.

Damian regarded her in silence, his grey eyes fixed on hers with the same unreadable calm they had held since she’d entered the lounge.

Seconds passed.

Finally, he gave a single nod.

“Noted.”

His voice was as composed as ever.

“But allow me to be equally clear…”

“This is a contract,” Damian said, his tone measured and unwavering. “Nothing more. You will have my name, my protection, and every privilege that comes with it. You’ll want for nothing.”

He paused.

“Do not mistake this arrangement for affection.”

His gaze remained fixed on hers.

“Are we understood?”

Valerie looked down at the contract one last time before lifting her eyes to meet his.

This wasn’t the future she’d imagined.

It wasn’t even a future she’d have chosen.

But neither was dying in an alley because of a debt she never owed.

She tightened her grip on the pen.

“Perfectly,” she answered.

Then, without another word, she signed her name.

Damian picked up his phone once again.

“Settle the debt,” was all he said before ending the call.

No negotiations.

No questions.

Just two words.

To him, it was another instruction.

To Valerie, it was the moment her life changed forever.

The following morning, she packed everything she owned into two suitcases and left behind the tiny apartment that held the last memories of both her parents. By sunset, she was standing beneath the towering gates of the Cavill estate, wondering whether she had escaped her nightmare…

…or simply stepped into another one.

The sting of hot water pulled Valerie back to the present.

She stood beneath the shower for a long moment, letting the water wash over her as though it could rinse away the memories clinging to her mind. It couldn’t.

Three months had passed since she signed the contract, yet the Cavill estate still felt more like a prison than a home.

She stepped out of the shower, dried herself, and slipped into a soft robe. As she reached into her cosmetic bag for a hair tie, her fingers brushed against something small and plastic.

She froze.

The pregnancy test.

She had missed her period over two weeks ago.

At first, she’d blamed the stress. Between adapting to a new life, living with a man who remained an enigma, and trying to convince herself that their arrangement was nothing more than a business transaction, it hadn’t seemed impossible that her cycle had simply been delayed.

But the thought had refused to leave her.

Earlier that evening, just before Damian had walked into the bedroom, she’d finally gathered the courage to take the test. She’d left it face down on the bathroom counter, telling herself she’d look at it later.

Then he’d arrived.

Everything else had driven it from her mind.

Now, with slightly trembling fingers, Valerie reached for the digital test and slowly turned it over.

Her heart stopped. Her blue eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated shock as she stared down at the small screen blinking back at her in the dim bathroom light.

Then the result appeared.

One word.

PREGNANT.

For a long moment, her mind refused to accept what her eyes were seeing.

Slowly, almost instinctively, her hand drifted to her stomach.

It wasn’t from tonight.

The child had already begun growing weeks ago.

A shaky breath escaped her lips.

Damian was going to have the heir he wanted.

But he didn’t know.

He had walked out of the bedroom only minutes earlier, reminding her—once again—that theirs was nothing more than a contract.

Valerie lowered the test, her fingers tightening around it as an unfamiliar ache settled deep inside her chest.

For the first time since signing the contract…

She had no idea what came next.
