A Letter Exposed My Husband's Secret Family Chapter 1

A letter slipped out as I was opening a package.

It was addressed to my husband, Jayden Whitney.

There was a line of small print on the envelope.

Property location: Riverside Gardens, Building 17, Unit 1103

"We don't own anything there," I muttered, frowning.

Jayden saw the words. His expression shifted, just barely.

"Probably junk mail. Some kind of scam. Hand it over, I'll take care of it."

I looked at his outstretched hand. It was trembling.

I said nothing.

I went into the bedroom and logged onto the property records database. Typed in his information.

The first result: our home.

The second: Riverside Gardens, Building 17, Unit 1103. Registration date — three months before our wedding.

I stared at that date. My whole body went cold.

A school-district property in that neighborhood. I'd dreamed about it for years.

But every time I brought it up, Jayden said the same thing: "It's too hard. We can't afford it."

He never lacked the money to fight for our daughter's future.

He'd simply reserved that spot, before we even married, for another family.

——

That night, after he fell asleep, I slipped into the study.

The drawer was locked. I tried his birthday as the combination.

It opened.

The envelope was buried at the very bottom, already torn open.

I stared at those words. My head buzzed like a swarm of wasps had nested inside my skull.

Every time he watched me gaze longingly at houses in that school district, what had he been thinking?

I picked up his phone.

Typed in his passcode from muscle memory.

Incorrect password.

Fingerprint. Also wrong.

At some point, without me knowing, the man sleeping beside me had changed his phone password.

I tried the apartment number: 171103.

A soft chime. The screen unlocked.

Jayden had scrubbed everything clean. Not a trace left behind.

But I followed a wire transfer from years ago — $1,314 — and it led me to an inconspicuous burner account.

April 12th. Roughly one month after our wedding.

The photo showed a man's bare back. But the mole on his lower back — I recognized it instantly. It was Jayden.

"Been sleeping with Jay for months now. The man is unreal."

January 2nd. The day of my first miscarriage. I spent the night alone in the hospital, crying until I had nothing left. Jayden said he had to entertain a client. He never came back.

The photo was of the nursery we'd decorated at home. The little quilt I'd sewn by hand was in the frame.

"This is the ultimate thrill. His wife's in the hospital losing their baby, and we're going at it in the nursery. Soaked her little homemade quilt right through."

August 9th. I'd just given birth. I was deep in postpartum recovery, drowning in depression so black I didn't want to be alive.

The photo was of our master bedroom.

"First time sneaking in while his wife's home. This man knows exactly what he's doing. Absolutely insane."

I was gasping for air.

My fingers clawed into my hair before I could stop them. My heart felt like it was being punctured by a thousand needles, the pain so sharp I couldn't breathe.

I fought the scream building in my throat.

Then I remembered. The neighbor downstairs had filed a complaint once.

"Have some decency up there! Screaming in the middle of the night — aren't you embarrassed?"

I'd always been confused. Everyone in our house went to bed early.

I'd wanted to confront the neighbor, but Jayden stopped me. "Why waste your time on people with no class?"

Now I thought I might finally have the answer.

I stood up and looked around the room — this room I knew so well, and yet didn't know at all.

Details I'd overlooked for years suddenly surfaced.

The smart speaker was loaded with music I'd never liked. I'd changed the settings multiple times, but it always reverted.

The bath towels were folded differently than the way I folded them.

The air conditioning was set several degrees lower than I preferred. Every time I turned it on, I had to adjust it right away.
