A Betrayal Written in Smoke Chapter 1

I returned from a six-month supervisory trip in Europe to find my meticulously cultivated, rare ghost orchid dead.

I couldn't accept that it had just withered. While inspecting the soil, I detected a scent that didn't belong—the cloying smell of cheap cigars.

I realized what had killed it: prolonged exposure to smoke. My husband and I don’t smoke cigars.

So, who had made themselves at home in my Chicago penthouse while I was away?

I didn't want to suspect Derrick. In our world, trust is the cornerstone. That's why we never spied on each other, never pried into each other's encrypted messages.

Perhaps I was just too naive.

I tore the entire penthouse apart—nothing. No ashtrays, no cigar cutters, not even a lingering whiff of smoke. For a moment, I wondered if I was mistaken. Maybe the orchid was just… fragile by nature.

Then I saw it—the mural in the study.

Behind the sofa, a custom mural I had painted myself used to hang. Now it was gone, the entire wall replaced with a mediocre print.

That's when it hit me. If someone had been smoking cigars in here for months, the walls would have been stained yellow. Derrick must have replaced the mural before I returned to hide the evidence.

I called him.

He answered immediately, his voice impossibly smooth. "Hey, Aurelia, what's wrong?"

"Why was the mural in the study replaced?" I asked, feigning nonchalance.

"Oh, that?" He chuckled. "A pipe leaked and stained it, so I had the whole thing replaced."

He sounded completely normal, not a single tremor in his voice. "By the way, I booked Gibson's for tonight. Get dressed up for me, will you? I can't wait to see my beautiful wife all done up tonight."

I hung up, but the more I thought, the more something felt deeply wrong. Finally, I posted an anonymous plea for advice in an encrypted group chat reserved for the women of the family:

[Just got back after six months away from Chicago. Found my orchid dead, with traces of cigar smoke on the stem. I suspect someone was living in my home—or worse. Should I suspect my husband of cheating?]

The replies came quickly:

[Is that even a question? Ten to one, yes.]

[Look for any women's items that don't belong to you.]

[Useless. My husband is a cheating bastard. They always clean that stuff up beforehand.]

[Right. They're meticulous about it.]

[Maybe your husband is just a closet cigar smoker?]

[Try this: Initiate physical contact. If he flinches even a little, there's a 99% chance he's cheating.]

I stared at the screen, my heart pounding, my thoughts a tangled wreck.

I changed in a daze and headed out for dinner.

Derrick had booked my favorite high-end steakhouse.

He hated the stuffy atmosphere there, but he still ordered the most expensive tomahawk steak for me—all while complaining about the wine list and keeping the sommelier scrambling to fetch different bottles.

For a second, I felt a pang of guilt.

Maybe I really am overthinking this.

Halfway through dinner, I couldn't hold it in any longer.

"Our orchid died. You knew, didn't you?"

He nodded, a look of genuine sadness crossing his face. He took my hand and squeezed it. "I was about to tell you. It withered a while ago. I called in a plant specialist, but they said there wasn't much hope. Don't be sad—we can always grow another one."

His voice was steady. No panic, no guilt.

Once again, I started to doubt myself.

Maybe he really was just smoking cigars at home and trying to hide it from me?

After dinner, he smiled and handed me a perfectly wrapped gift.

I opened it. Inside was a rare, out-of-print architectural monograph.
